Makita is a japanese company.
go to that link and take a close look at their cutaway of the
352 at the top of the page, tell me what you think of that
design

Didnt catch that before. Made the pic larger and caught what
they were doing. Interesting but way over my pea brain on why
they went that way.

Getting a screen capture was more than a mite tricky, so this is
the best I can do on my old 'puter. It looks like a strato
design if you follow the blue and green airflow, but I'm not a 2
cycle expert.
