Willard, you are an encyclopedia sir. I've learned much from
your posts, both here and on the Tree House forum. Thanks for
sharing it all.

Thanks oldtimer, I'm still learning about sawchain ha ha.
It was just a couple of years ago that I learned chisel sawchain
has been around for over 60 years, for some reason I always had
it in my head that chisel was introduced in the 1960s.
Myself being interested in timbersport competitions I always
have a fascination to make that chain cut faster, just like the
auto industry they can't have proper research and development
without auto sport competition.
I remember reading of one veteran of chainsaw racing Sven
Johnson . With his wealth of knowledge he worked alongside Ray
Carlton's sawchain company, doing some research and development
for them.
I myself don't have near the knowledge Sven has or experience in
timbersports, I have always lived in one of the most isolated
parts of North America, travelling to top competitions was just
too expensive and time consuming. Plus we didn't have the
internet back then either :D

Thanks for bumping this up Kevin. I had subscribed to this
thread ages ago..............................but had since
forgotten it. Had forgotten about the Stihl version. Now I
have more to search for on ebay. There's a lot of 76SL on ebay
(good for the racers since they're breaking down the
chain...........not for me) and a bit of 76LG (and the McCulloch
version). I intend to gather some more up for my 40-50cc saws.
Can regular Oregon 72 presets/tie straps be used to join 76LG
loops (as stated by some ebay sellers in their 72 preset/tie
strap listings), or do I need to scare up 76 presets/tie straps?

Hi guys when I used to work with 76LG chain I always had a good
supply of presets, so can't say for sure.
If you were to do it you'd definitely have to grind a little off
to match but can't say for sure if the .058 rivet flange of the
72 will fit the 76 drive link.
Can only take one apart and experiment.

It's been 25 yrs since I last made a race chain but I remember
spinning and making my own presets.
Before making Oregon 72/76 race chain I was building Windsor 3/8
AT chisel bit chain with pieces I bought through my saw dealer.
I could buy bags of rivets in both .058 and .063 flange and bags
of side links. I'd break a chain down for the cutters and drive
links , then dog bone etc and build from there.
I think Oregon sold all the chain parts too and may still
do...........

Great info here. I see some Mac 370PG is the same 76LG on eBay.
The (affordable) search begins.

My brother who is a saw collector bought out an old saw dealers
inventory of chain and parts, stuff going back over 50 years. He
got boxes of links, cutters and other parts plus rolls of chain
for a couple hundred bucks.
Never know what you may run into before it gets thrown into the
landfill site to be gone forever.

I just looked at that Mac 370 chain it's not a match to the
76LG. It's 3/8 LoPro equal to the Stihl Picco or Oregon 91
series.

Thanks for taking the time to look at that. I am certainly in
the dark with respect to this likeable chain.
