not yet. got a "new" one at the salvage yard which is why I'm
working on the one I described. getting fuel line, filters, and
carb kit. the way it was acting was reminding me of bad seals or
a leak. guess I'm gonna just strip it down and make sure.

1/2 to 4 turns.

Got the carb rebuilt on the "new" 4218. Reassembled. Tried to
start it amidst high expectations. No joy. Got spark. Plug
smells of fuel. I've no pressure gauge so I can't check but it
seems to have low compression when I'm trying to start. What am
I missing?

How did the plug look when you pulled it out. Was it wet, or
dry or just a little bit of fuel on it. That can tell a lot
right there.

Little bit of fuel. Tried priming it through plug hole and
through carb. No joy. Might've flooded it but no sign of it or
heavy fuel smell and no fuel poured out with plug pulled and
turned up down
