hand square filing
By: man of stihl Date: November 13, 2011, 11:31 am

Well i've been playing around with a double bevel flat file to
square sharpen my chains. I think i may be getting the hang of
this. I honestly can say that i will be sharpening all my chains
with this flat file from now on. Only using the round files for
gullet cleaning or for sharpening someone else's chain. ;) I
just wish they didn't cost so much. about $9.99 plus shipping a
piece. I changed a round ground chain over to square and my file
already feels half wore out. Here is my 066 9T sprocket with a
chain i made. I'll get pics of a cutter tooth in a bit.

Looks like it was cutting good.
You using the save edge? They get the metal out fast. Then I
know guys were using the olberg or olberg copy file to finish up
with and now using diamond coated 6 sided files to finish with.
I never could get the hang of it to make a fast chain and was
shown how to step by step. Some can do it some cant.
Couple here could make a good how to video. ;)
Then the guys with the modified square grinders put out some
nice chains too. There is a Harry Bodecker modified grinder
offered to me. But at the time I was getting out of it so I
passed on it. Just didnt think firewood guys needed square
grinded chain. But the ones I have did some for by hand and by
ATOP guide as work chain loved it.

That video is a big help. I have s swing arm grinder that benny
whitfield build. It is patterned after the 450 simington. Works
real good just having to get the hang of how to set
it!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't mind at all. I was going to link it. You look a little
low in the corner for a work chain. It will dull pretty quick
with that little beak. I go super extreme cleaning out the
gullet. It makes less work for the double bevel that way and it
will pull long chips almost an inch long in soft maple or
poplar.
I was kicking around the idea of a grinder also. Nate
has a grinder that works well. I dont remember what kind it is
though. But for now i think i'll hand file. [quote
Yes, i'm using a save edge double bevel. I also bought
a Pferd 6 sided file. That file is a little harder to use IMO.

Benny made two of these grinders at the same time. One for him
and one for steve morgan. That was the only two he ever made.
When steve quit racing i bought it. I got about 10 new grinding
wheels with it. I will post some pics of it when i get time if
i can!!!!!!!!!!!! Go ahead and laugh kevin ;D

I don't like the 6 sided triangle shaped ones. They're harder to
hold and get a good angle. I like save edge double bevels the
best. The first sharpening is the hardest even on square ground
chain since it's hard to get the same angle as the grinding
wheel.
