McCulloch PM 1000 Partner P100
By: Al Smith Date: November 3, 2015, 6:50 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
The only reason I got this thing is the fact at least in this
area it's rather rare .In my life time I've seen less than half
a dozen .3 or 4 that ran and a few that did not .
It was in need of some work when I got it.The anti vib system
had broken the tabs off the casting at the front part of the
lower handle .Somebody did a hill billy fix with a piece of
perforated metal strapping and hose clamps and JB weld .
I did a redneck fix with aircraft grade aluminum plate and M5
button head cap screws .Had to make a new dampner in the handle
.Works fine

Next up is the air filter .It had a clip on type of flock filter
with a large portion missing .Another tempory fix was bolting on
80 micron screen wire .That would have worked butI found the
more modern filter from a Partner P700/P7000.
Because of the way it's made I had to fabricate some studs to
mount it.Redneck again ,M5 threaded rod and nylon lock nuts .
The cylinder and piston are clean as a pin so evidently it
doesn't seem to be damaged .It has an eyebrow exhaust port
which makes it easier to pull over

Now the oiler which damned near drove me nuts .First I had to
figure out how the thing worked .
It's a crankshaft operated rotary driven internally from a worm
gear inside the crankcase .If the saw is running it's pumping
oil or should.It didn't .
Evidently the oil flows through a manual oiler which is just a
piston with an o-ring and a pair of metal reed type check valves
.New o-ring still no oil .Pulled the rotary pump apart
.installed a new o-ring ,no oil .Took the check valves off
,cleaned the mating surface of the pump and checks, primed it,one
little squirt .Now I'm pizzed .
So I noticed a plug in the front portion of the rotary, shown in
the photo .Out came the plug ,squirted a bunch of oil in
it,started the saw.My Lawdy it blew oil like old spindle top
.One more victory

Of course rebuilt the carb and defeated that rattle ball
governer gizmo with a wad of aluminum foil .
It takes either Mac 10 series bars or Husqvarna .If anybody uses
the Husky bars you either have to modify the Mac plates or use
the size as Husky 2100 which are far cheaper than the hawks try
to fetch on flea bar .Like less than 15 .Randys engine service
,Ohio .
Problem with Mac bars is it takes an extra driver or two but not
as much as the driver count for Husky or Stihl .I'm just going
to use the Husky for the time .
Must have taken me 4-5 months to get this far as time is one
thing I have very little .It starts easy and runs strong and
that's what I was after

Yes I did make a few cuts with it .First with a 32" before I
rebuild the carb .It faltered a bit .After I rebuilt the carb
and defeated the governor it did much better ,24" that time .The
oak was close to 30" I suppose .
It had sat not started for about two weeks and I fired it up
night before last after I took the pictures .4 pulls .

Just in casual observation one thing it could stand is a little
wider exhaust port .It's the exact bore and stroke of a
Husqvarna 2100 but doesn't in my opinion have enough port size
for it's displacement .
Then again thinking about it, if it was governed for the 8,500
as stated the porting would support that speed .I have no doubt
it could easily crank out over 11,000 with very little work .
As it stands now for what I want it to do it has plenty enough
power without doing anything .I did however pull the spark
arrester which is an interesting way to do an arrester .This
leaves a baffled muffler with the baffle only on one side and
now two aprox. 5/8" ports on both the baffled and unbaffled
sides .

I did use this thing a couple weeks ago on what was left of a
36" diameter one time 100 foot ash the wind blew the top out of
.Good sized ash. Cord and half of firewood and a thousand board
feet of saw logs .
It appears to me it might be do for a set of rings .Nearly 100
cc's of saw should have been able with a 24" bar to not hardly
slow down buried .I had to finish the job with a souped 038 Mag
that didn't falter .
Winter coming on ,back shelved for a while on this one .
