Stihl fs 80

Anyone have any info on these? Google search doesn't turn up all
that much in depth information. There's one for sale locally for
a decent price (I think) of $150. It seems as though they were
made for a long time, 80s and 90s, but not sure if as recent as
last 10 years or so? Anything to watch for on these? Solid shaft
or no? Any way to tell date of manufacturing by s/n? Appreciate
any info.

I know nothing, but quick search shows STIHL 25.4 cc , flex
cable drive.

says the fs85 had a soild shaft in above read. The fs80 flex
cable type shaft.

There were two different FS80 Stihls. The more recent one (that
is actually a Stihl design) is shown in that Backyardboss link.
The early FS80 was a Shindaiwa design. Sold by Stihl in the
early-mid 1980's. I have a 1983-1984 or so production FS80AVRE
that my Grandpa bought new. Big heavy Shindaiwa design. Has a
TK slide valve carb. Mine doesn't owe anyone a damn thing,
having given 20 years of hard service before being retired for
the most part. It still runs, but is tired. I'll post a few
pics later tonight if can find them...

I am keeping my eyes open for one or an FS 85, they are real
workhorses and I am partial to old school 2 strokes. Parts are
readily available. $150 seems a fair price for a good one but I
would not pay more than that. We are moving to an acreage in a
month and my little Echo curved shaft just isn't going to do the
job.

There are still lots of parts floating around. I JUST missed
buying an NOS P/C set for peanuts a few years ago. An ebay
oops.......

I ran an fs80 in the early 80s for my lawn mowing round couldn't
kill it still a runner today, only problem I have had was trying
to get a new in tank fuel line took me a bout 12 months to find
one. It sits for months at a time without being used But I pull
it out for long grass jobs with a steel blade. Scored another
recently should be a runner as it fires on carb prime. That one
was a freebie

Thanks for the input guys. That site C4F posted was the best I
had found also, missed the details on flex shaft in there
though. Sounds like positive feedback so that's a good deal.
From reading I found the old ones with slide carb have all the
carb screws in a vertical row, is this correct? Going to shoot
over to look at it later today or tomorrow I think. Don't have a
lot to use it on but then I could leave the one I have now at
the camp up north. Thanks again!

I do not have a FS-80.
I do have four FS55R weed whackers. One was originally a
standard FS-55 and two were always FS-55R's and one was
originally a FS-45 curved shaft weed whacker. All four are the
27.2cc #4140 two stroke power head.
Two of these have Straight shafts, gear heads and guards from
FS-90 four strokes and two have their original FS-55R straight
flex shafts, gear heads, and guards. All four look like FS-55R's
The FS-90 solid steel shaft units have a heavier feel than the
flex shaft versions. This is partially due to the fact that the
solid steel shaft FS-90 is 6" longer than the FS-55 straight
flex shaft. The flex shaft itself weighs less than the solid
steel shaft for the flex wound wire shaft is hollow.
Operationally for me one works as well as the other and I have
never had any trouble with the flex type shafts.

Here's my old style FS80AVRE. Absolutely no relation to the
later FS80. My machine has a solid drive shaft.
