machinist tool how to questions.....
By: 1manband Date: May 10, 2014, 7:59 am
---------------------------------------------------------
there are more than enough experienced folks here!.......
when i moved my small lathe into the basement, during the course
of putting it back together noticed that there is a small gap
where the ways bolt to the upper legs.
from looking at this closer, i could tighten the mounting bolts
up more. is this a good idea? or should they remain as is?
the weight of the ways and motor close this gap up.
don't want any undo lathe vibrations.
have never noticed this before, and lathe was working in this
condition for years.

yes.... the upper pair of legs under the ways.
don't know if by tightening these bolts down more, if it will
introduce more vibration. don't want to honk on them too much.
if i break them, will be difficult to replace. where they are
located, cannot get a torque wrench on them.
right now, everything is sitting nice and level.

I think as long as they're tight it should be ok. Be aware of
any twisting or binding when attaching the bolt from feet to the
bench, that's where you could alter the flatness of the bed by
tightening to an uneven/twisted surface. The little lathes don't
have the most rigid beds so that could be an issue.

will bring home the calibrated level from work, to do some more
checking on the things you mentioned. twisting was something i
didn't consider. will check the floor as well.
maybe will shim it if necessary.
just had vibration on my mind.
thanks adam.

Yeah I have one myself .It does fine except an Aloris vee slide
doesn't fit it .There are off just a tad bit .It's not a big
deal to me because I make my own slides .
I think I have about 40 slides (tool holders ).I got so it took
me an hour ,give or take to carve one out on the Bridgeport .
They were just cold roll bar stock, nothing fancy .

Joe, if you get an Aloris type clone make sure it has the wedge
type tightening jib, Not the button type as they slip easily.

thanks guys.
al...
do the slides not fit (interchange) because of poor
craftsmanship? most all the clones seem to be selling with 4 or
5 slides included. if they don't interchange between different
brands, thinking i should stay away?
adam...
seen both kinds out there. will focus on the wedge style.

I originally made most of my slides .Then a tool and die maker
friend of mine made me some using Aloris slides as a pattern
,those didn't fit .Problem was he made them out of heat treated
4140 steel .He had to use surface grinder to repair them but
they eventually did work .
Now this guy was pretty good ,Fact he made some wedge type tool
posts .So I know if it was a copy of Aloris he as dead on with
the size .
I bought some slides which were not Aloris such as knurling
wheel slides that did fit but they were not Aloris .
On mine you can adjust the gimbles a little bit so if the slide
isn't dead on it will still work .I have no idea what brand it
is .
