The piston pump needs to be slid back in the pump housing to
allow for the control bolt to thread into the pump housing. The
round portion above the threads on the control bolt rides on the
end of the pump shaft near the splined portion. Once the
control bolt fell out the piston pump slid forward enough to not
let the control bolt slide in. May be I am missing what you are
asking.

That makes perfect since. Will this take a tear down to do? What
kind of a job is it to slide it back?

Not a big deal to push it back but you will have to remove the
clutch drum, clutch and worm wheel. So you can get to the pump
shaft teeth that the worm wheel engages. You can then push the
shaft in the desired direction with a dental pick!

Got a idea just now. From looking at this 338 oiler pic.
Separate the part that screws into the case. Then put the part
in the case first then screw the adjuster part back in the
other part once installed back in the case.
Remember I am just WAGing here.

Good deal gunrac.
I enjoyed learning more about these saws from the side lines.
The above was neat to know too.

Easy little tricks to everything, nice to find a forum where
there are good people that will share them.

it....I been sick the last several days, bit better now. Maybe

Still betting just the fulcrum is a bit high and puddling fuel.
Then allowing puddled fuel to go down the intake track to
cylinder when dropped to ground or raised straight up like I
showed you that day.
Soon see............
