       Stihl 028
By: brettl Date: January 18, 2014, 3:27 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I've been looking for an older(i.e. less expensive) mid-size
Stihl and have decided on the 028. Stumbling across 2 that I
picked up reasonable didn't hurt. ;) One is a 028 WB, the second
is an AVEQ. I'm going through them before I put them into
service and have a few questions.
First, have any of you done threads anywhere on a muffler mod
for the 028? I searched and couldn't find one. Ideally, I'd like
to see pics of mm's done to the 028.
Second, looking ahead and hopefully FAR ahead, have any of you
found a good aftermarket p&c that you have got good service
       from?
       Thanks everyone.

       I've had numerous 028's and they really don't need a MM. They're
pretty opened up from the factory. The muffler on them is pretty
much a hollow "can". Not sure you'd see much gain. I'd check
Ebay for a good used OEM piston and cylinder. Saw a few well
priced ones there just this week. About the same, maybe a bit
less, than the few aftermarket ones available. Good saws and
       last a long long time.

Thanks roostersgt. Since I've chosen this saw for my 16" (maybe
18") go to saw, I'd like to learn all I can about the different
variants and their respective features. I have a WB, WBAV EQ,
and know about the Super and would in fact like to find one. Or
two, or ten..... Actually just missed out on a nice one local. I
just ran across a WBAV. No EQ on this. I didn't know about this
one so my question to the 028 gurus out there is how many
variants were there? In the research I've done I'd only seen the
3 I first mentioned. Thanks for and insight. :)

I have seen many variations, don't think they had different
designations, not as bad as the old 031, but a bunch of
       different features.
How many of your saws have the complete chain brake?

What's wrong with the cylinder that's on it? Many times they can
       be saved.

Hi Ron. Nothing wrong that I know of. Just thinking down the
road since these 2 028's will be doing the majority of my
firewood cutting. I was thinking if there is a good p&c out
there it would be best to order one now while the saw is only 30
years old ;D. Although, these saws are so common, I don't see
parts supply drying up anytime soon.

My 028 super really responded well to a muff mod. This is the
       one I did to it.............

       Brettl, I had a 028 super that I muffler modded. I took a
Dremel and opened the outlet to about twice the size and opened
up the deflector also. The saw did respond well.
The muffler on the 028 super I worked on I thought was very
       restrictive.
