Does anyone know what the difference in the redmax 4000 and 400
       are?
Both specs show the same ???.

from what i could tell, it's just the plastics. could be
different in the porting but i haven;t got into them that far.
just a muffler mod is all they need. good little saw.

which one would be the best choice for a funny little project
with pipe and alky between gz400 and gz380?

       The GZ400 has a primer bulb, the 4000 doesn't. I have both and I
don't know of any difference other than that. I prefer the 400
because the primer bulb makes it a bit easier to start.

Maybe the 4000 just is an "updated" version?

I don't think the 4000 is an updated version. they were
introduced at the same time. the 400 is more likely a price
point unit. although $20-$30 isn't much of a difference for
       different regions. :)
differences? none. other than one lacking a purge bulb and the
other having a 'satin' finish. I've heard people say the 4000's
anti-vibe is better. I say nonsense. they have the exact same
parts. they both make the same power also.
I will say when buying a gz400 new, you get a crappy semi-chisel
skip lo-pro chain and the 4000 has an Oregon 91vg installed.
