       Efco 181
By: farmboy Date: September 7, 2013, 6:32 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Pulled down my 181 to trim tabs on carb. Decided to pull cyl
for a 7200 to 8200 conversion I had planned on doing. I picked
up a NOS 980 P&C kit a while back to go in it's place. 181 has
decomp valve 980 doesn't. WTH piston was lightly scored on ex.
(it will cleanup very easily). 36 to1 Husky XP oil premium
nonE gas and pig rich 11,200 by tach (13,500 is max rated rpm) 1
tank fuel through it. What would cause this? This is a New
saw. Plenty of oil on piston, crankcase, etc. Fuel was less
than a week old from gas station.

WAG Maybe some flashing left in the exhaust port.
Does it have any air leak symptoms when rolled side to side and
       bar up and down etc?

ext side normally means heat , can be by lean or to much
ethanol in the gas which causes it to be lean , it could also
mean that the piston is growing at a faster rate than the
cylinder , I know most are going to say them it should have 4
corner seizer on the piston but if its just a touch to tight
then the ext side gets it first

No it was running fine.[quote author=Cut4fun_

Non ethanol premium gas. Looking @ the piston top there was one
little ding looking spot in the carbon on the off side of the
score. Could have been piece of slag don't know. Does
Gilhardoni make Efco cylinders? The 4-5 I've looked @ were very
nice looked like some Gihl cyl's I've had.
My thought was running hot from being pig rich @ 11,200?? Kid
that was running it was probably leaning on it hard. I wasn't
there so don't know just know the kid.

if the saw was pushed on real hard or was real dull it will get
very hot even if its set real rich cause as it heats up it
becomes not so rich any more , When I'm blocking 4 foot stuff or
bigger I set my saw very rich and yes in the first block its
rich but by the second block U/m very close to being right on
the money but I can still lean burn the motor if I keep pushing
hard on it and that even can happen on a big saw , heat in the
motor controls how much fuel the saw needs to keep running

I've observed this too listening to saws in big cuts

you would not believe the number of 660 stihl I see here blew up
from heat , they set the saw with a 20 inch on it then put a 36
inch bar on it and donot set the saw richer , they blow up real
       good ;D
