i like cheap saws!

picked these up today for the princely sum of 46bux :)

poulan 3700. 160 psi, pretty low hour.
mastercraft (poulan 3400). very very low hour.
jonsered 49sp. high hour but the top end is in very nice shape
and she pumps 155psi..
i have another clutch cover that accepts the chainbrake stuff on
the way. the yellow saw is missing the flywheel and the bottom
front av that the top handle attaches to is mushed. the 3700 and
jonny run ok but need attention to the fuel bits.

Never seen a yellow 3400. Least that I can remember, unless it
was the relabeled skil ones. Never a mastercraft chainsaw.

the 'mastercraft' label was from the days canadian tire was
putting their name on a quality product. they sold the 3400
counter vibe as their biggest saw for 2 years until poulan
discontinued it for the lighter 2700-3300 series chainsaws.
canadian tire labeled them for i think 3-4 years beside their
poulan counterparts until they decided to just sell the poulan
branded ones. if i remember right they went on to sell them for
another 3 years before dropping them for the cheaper 33cc-46cc
stuff they have now.
the yellow 3400 sold for $349.99. that i will never forget. when
ever i walked past them when they were being sold i would look
at the price tag and figure how long it would take me to save up
for one. they were usually $20 cheaper than a craftsman badged
equal. but at least at sears you could get the 3700 :)

I've only worked on 3 J-reds in my lifetime .One of them was a
49 cc 225 model I think .For a little 3 cuber that thing was
impressive as I suspect that model might be in good tune .

this is the first jonny 49sp i've seen in almost 15 years :) it
starts easy and runs fairly well. i figure the inlet screen is
blocked up a bit. it's a little soggy on the acceleration and it
takes alot of screw turning to get any response from lean to
rich. it holds a good rpm, but it ain't right.

that was the plan from the get go :)
2 issues with the jonny:
going to have to look at the points. went through the carb. it
was fairly clean and really didn't need to be touched, but
re-cleaned and rebuilt anyway.
still has the same bog. starts, idles, and revs fine. cuts
pretty good also, but the bog is there. not enough to stall, or
even close to that, but it bogs. it isn't an air leak. without
taking the flywheel and clutch off to see if there is any
leakage with soapy water, i threw on the the pump and tested it.
the guage holds pretty good between 5-6psi. and when i throw the
hand pump on it to test for vac, it shows no leakage.
piston is sealing perfect, no foggy mess coming out of the carb
when running it. it will tune all the way rich to too lean
properly. holds the tune properly.
i figure somebody has been under the flywheel and maybe has the
points gap set to big. or they're worn. but it doesn't miss a
beat. no miss, sputter, just smooth. only for that bog.
also need the lower top handle antivibe on the pull start side.
the handle had a pretty good tweak to it. i have the handle
twisted back the where it's supposed to be, but nothing to use
for a rubber mount.
does anybody have a lead on a good one or maybe a suitable
replacement?

If the points are set long all it will do is advance the timimg
which might be okay might not .
On the Macs a little advance really perks them up but if you get
out of the range for the points to close you run into problems
which is about 30-32 advance .If you get too far out of the "hot
spot" being dead center of the magnetic flux lines the spark
will not be as hot .Then if you want to pursue it any farther
you need to off set the flywheel with a filed key .Probabley if
you stick it on a wheel and get around 28-29 advance that should
be about right .
