In order to execute the office of the leader of the christian
world, one must be favored in the public eye. John Paul II is
commonly referred as a great pope and was recently cleared for
sainthood. His most notable trait was his popularity among
catholics, a trait he shares with Pope Francis. John Paul was
pope for 25 years and 17 million people take part in his weekly
audience. He was more popular than the catholic church itself
and he had taken 104 foreign trips, more than any other pope. If
Francis continues to be cherished by the catholics it would be
no surprise if he accomplishes similar things.

I agree with Francis 4 Life, Pope Francis will be a great leader
because of his public appeal. I have followed Francis since he
was first appointed a pontiff. His way with the public is unique
only to him and John Paul the second. However, his open-minded
and courageous nature is why he will be a great pope. Francis
takes a bold approach to papacy, attacking controversial
subjects such as homosexuality. The following example: "If a
gay person is in eager search of God, who am I to judge them?”
displays his unprejudiced manner of interpretation towards the
concept of homosexual Christians. In addition, his use of
rhetoric and his status in the phrase “who am I to judge them?”
emphasizes his belief that it is not wrong to be a homosexual
Christian. When Francis makes a statement of this magnitude to
such a controversial subject, it shows his courage and his
open-mindedness, which I believe are the real reason he will
succeed in office.

Pope Francis will not be a great pope because of his inability
to execute under the guidelines of the bible. He continues to
encourage homosexuality in the Catholic Church when the bible
clearly states that homosexual acts are abominations and that
homosexuality is a crime, as evidenced by the following examples
from the bible:
Genesis 19:24-25: "Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon
Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven;"
"And he overthrew those cities, and
all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that
which grew upon the ground."
Leviticus 18:22: "Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with
womankind: it is abomination."
Leviticus 20:13: "If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth
with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they
shall surely be put to
death; their blood shall be upon
them."
These examples from the bible disagree with the concept of
homosexuality yet Francis defies them in order to attain the
public's attention. By doing so he has proven that he is not
capable of papacy when he disrespects the teachings of god.

PopeFrancisSux makes a viable argument, Pope Francis' stance on
homosexuality does go against the aforementioned verses. However
the bible has contextual elements cannot be ignored. The bible
was written by all kinds of people from different backgrounds
over a 1600 year period. Throughout these periods, homosexuality
was viewed as a unjust action that was punishable by death, and
thus, this is reflected in the bible, where homosexuality is
described as an abomination that should result in death
(Leviticus 20:13). However as times have changed, homosexuality
has become a larger part of popular culture and is no longer
discriminated to the same level as in the B.C. time period. So
it is only reasonable for Francis to have adjusted to the
concept of homosexuality in modern culture.
In my Opinion, Francis is in line for a long and healthy term as
pope. His ability to confidently take-on conflicts in an
objective manner is his key to success in papacy. "If a gay
person is in eager search of God, who am I to judge them? The
Catholic Church teaches that gay people should not be
discriminated against; they should be made to feel welcome."The
following quote suggests that the Catholic church does not
condone the discrimination of homosexuals, and that he/she
deserves to be treated fairly. Francis demonstrates his
unprejudiced view by implying that he is not one to judge if a
homosexual is in search of god. Furthermore, He displays
confidence in his tone in the audio recording. Francis has lead
the church to a state of open-mindedness where they confidently
tackle the issues that could be controversial in an unprejudiced
manner.

Francis has addressed homosexuality many times and imposed his
opinion that the LGBT community should be accepted by the
church. While I agree with his opinion, Francis has focused on
these issues far too frequently and has not paid much attention
to other important issues such as:
Celibacy
Birth Control
Premarital Sex
Although Francis will most likely achieve a long and healthy
term as pope, his overemphasis on the issue of homosexuality in
the catholic church may lead to his downfall.
