       Week 4 Discussion

       Week 4 Discussion Topic # 1
In Career Focus: A Personal Job Search Guide, Martucci Lamarre
(2006) suggests that if we want to realize our job dreams, we
need to think about ourselves as products to be marketed, and in
order to do this, we need to contextualize ourselves within the
five Ps of marketing: product, price, place, presentation, and
promotion (p. 4). Please reflect and respond to the following
       questions taken from our textbook.
What exactly is your product and how is it different from
(or better than) other similar products?
Where will you sell your product?
Who are the potential buyers of the product and how does
that price compare to similar products being offered?
How will you let others know about your product, and how
will you develop its presentation to appropriate markets?

Network, network, network. I cannot say enough about
networking. I know if I hadn't let the power that be that I was
applying for the job I have know I would not have gotten it.
Another thing that is very useful is LinkedIn, cannot say enough
about it either. Just be careful who you have a connections,
you want to make sure that you personally know all your
       connections.

Yes it is vital to closely monitor who you have a connections
with when networking you do not want anyone you may be
associated with reflecting badly on you. Also know who to trust
if you do not know a contact personally and you cant judge their
character it is best to lose their information. It just helps
keep your online reputation healthy and increases the likely
hood that you will be hired when you start to actively look for
       a job.

When it comes to selling oneself to a potential employer it is
vital that you be prepared after and if they accept ones resume
there will often be a interview. It pays to research the company
ahead of time to show you are serious about filling the job
position. Also find the companies dress code guide so you know
what to wear at your interview.

Another point to be made is when in the interview the
interviewer wants the questions to be answered in a to the point
and concise way. If they ask about your accomplishments tell
them but in a way that does not sound like bragging but at the
same time do not sell your self short .

Like we said last week, ALWAYS be truthful but don't always tell
the WHOLE truth. All that matters to employers are your
accomplishments and skills. Too much information is sometimes a
       bad thing.

As we have discussed to death in class the answer still really
hasn't changed much. The question is how we can we make people
get to know us better through non traditional methods. The most
effective way these days is simply to use linkedin, facebook,
and twitter like most do. In addition you can have them learn
about you though your work you have done in the past.

       Roshanda,
That is so true, certifications can be very important. You just
need to see what is needed/good for your career. For example
after I get my degree in Project Management, I should get my PMP
       (Project Management Professional) certification. This
certification is worth so much in the Project Management
industry. Do you know what certifications you want/need?

An important thing to remember when marketing yourself is to
understand that it is highly likely the person hiring you knows
a thing or to. This means simply you don't want to go into an
interview and make yourself out to be more than you are. Simply
go in, be yourself, and let your work and history do the bulk of
       the work.

Its definitely about who your know. People talk not only for
career purposes, but chat regularly because of friendships they
made. Its all about getting your foot in the door and making
sure people are aware of your existence. Then when potential
offers open up and you have made good relationships friends will
talk and your name may be brought up if your credentials match.
