Robillard-Odell: IN THE MATTER OF APPLICATION FOR THE PARDON OF
"AMER BEN ALI" ALIAS FRENCHY.

---------------------------------------------------------
Unfortunately, I can't provide the date for the following
document, but it was written and submitted in 1901.
In looking over material related to Ovide Robillard, attorney
and leader of the pardon campaigns, I came
across this letter sent to Governor Benjamin Odell with brief
outlines of what the various affiants brought
to the table. I thought I had added this document back in 2023,
but it appears I didn't. I'm sorry for
the oversight.
A few comments about the content:
1. Prior to this letter, the expressed desire of the pardon
campaign(s) was that they did not dispute the verdict,
rather they aimed to obtain a pardon for Ali and that they would
foot the bill for his trip out of the country
and back to Algeria.
However, in this letter, Robillard lets his hair down and
brings up the criticisms of the verdict which he states
had existed from the very beginning.
2. Robillard writes:
It is submitted that the affidavits of Mr. Damon
and Mr. Brennan show that a person whose appearancе
agreed with the published descriptions of Shakespeare's
companion, has been found, and that such person was not
Frenchy.
A minor point, perhaps, but Brennan never states that he saw the
farmhand, nor does he
mention anything about the farmhand in his affidavit. The odds
are that he had never seen
him before.
