A Violent Algerian Lies To Recorder Smyth

Here's the story that might sound somewhat familiar? a violent
Algerian, who came to the US via South America, and who was
arrested and brought before recorder Smyth, speaking a strange
mixed patois which interpreter Cutugno had trouble with. He lied
and contradicted himself like a "perfectly sane liar" and was
       found guilty by the jury.

Nice one, Pete......I mentioned this case here, but your article
goes into far greater depth. Thanks, boss!
Several similarities between Ali and this guy, aren't there?

I also looked at the 1889 ship register for the Allianca...just
in case Miszrachee ( NY Times spelling) came here on the same
       boat as Ali.
He didn't....at least, under that name.

       Pete:
This is Rabbi Henry Pereira Mendes ( April 1852 – 21 October
       1937).

On March 5, 1892, he was shot in the abdomen at his home by a
beggar named Jose Mizrachee, narrowly escaping with his life.
Years later, at the man's passing, Dr. Mendes paid for his
funeral and ensured a proper Jewish burial.

The last sentence is a little puzzling....not that the Rabbi
paid for his would-be assassin's funeral....but that it was a
       Jewish service.

       Pete:
       Update: Misrachee was a Jew.

Speaking of similarities, there's an article from 1891 or 1892
in which three Arabs or Algerians were beheaded, for what I
       cannot
       recall.
Anyway, the reporter compared them to Ali, but I forget why. If
I locate it, I'll post it.
