Thoughts On Past & Present Brown Research...

Thread for articles, programs, and other media-promoted junk
that had made its way into the fabric of the case.
That there are no quality documentaries, segments within other
crime-related programs, or films/videos devoted to the Brown
murder should be no surprise to those who study this case.
Podcasts either promote completely nonstarter suspects or
present Ali as the framed, poor immigrant schnook caught up in
the machinery of 19th-century New York justice.
Podcasts positing the George Chapman-as-murderer theory or that
even Francis Tumblety was her murderer are pretty awful and
without foundation, dependent wholly on speculation and press
reports. 'Press report' Brown research had its day from 2000
until mid-2021. Fortunately, the quality of case research has
improved to the point that it sits today, with more solid,
fact-based research gleaned from official files and genealogical
work in the last 4 years than in the 130 years that preceded
them.
A few items to start with to illustrate what I'm driving at.....
The 2009 documentary, 'Jack The Ripper In America' featuring
former police officer, Ed Norris, is perhaps the standard-bearer
for schlock research. Norris's program's premise was that James
Kelly, the 1883 wife-murderer, was not only Jack the Ripper, but
the murderer of Carrie Brown. Norris referenced the work of
British author, James Tully, and his book on Kelly.
A cursory glance in James Tully's 1997 book, Prisoner 1167, on
page 76, reveals that James Kelly did not arrive in New York
until 1892 on a German steamer named the Zaandam. An entire
hour of rubbish.
Another example of the falsehoods that have been added to the
narrative of the case appeared in the Whitechapel Society book,
A Terrible Legacy, in a chapter written by their one-time head,
William Beadle. Beadle didn't invent the following falsehood,
but merely repeated the story told by J. Robert Nash in his 2008
book, 'I Am Innocent', a massive compendium of stories and cases
involving falsely tried and convicted individuals. Nash
claimed, and gives no references, that witnesses lied about Amer
Ben Ali because they were threatened by the police. One witness,
unnamed, is claimed to have said 'one dick kept hitting me about
the face until I agreed to say terrible things about Ali in
court'. ( Page 91 ). Beadle's inclusion of a non-existent
reference is indicative of how some modern writers see something
that fits their view on the case from another source, without
actually investigating the claim, and inserting it in their
work.

Even today, people who study the crime and are sort of in the
middle between amateur and expert case...the politically-driven
profiteers and positionists... people who read enough material
or digested enough audio/visual information to be above amateur
status....almost universally view the verdict as an example of
anti-immigrant views being enacted on Ali. They are critical of
the police and claim a frame-up despite the glaring fact that
there are no examples of crimes in Manhattan in which the NYPD
intentionally framed someone to satisfy the public or maintain
their reputation. Additionally, these people harp about how
Ali's racial background played a role in the case, without
considering that the jurors, if so disposed, could have easily
handed down a first-degree verdict that would have put Ali in
the electric chair, all the rage in the year 1891. We here on
this site know that Ali's racial background and his religion
played no part in his being sentenced for the crime. A few of us
here on the site were surprised that these elements played as
little a part as they did. It was the contemporary newspapers
that questioned the jury, misunderstanding the reason for their
second-degree verdict and the basics of how a jury arrives at
their decision(s).
Another example is the 2011 documentary, Finding Jack The
Ripper, featuring Trevor Marriott, in which he maintained German
seaman Carl Feigenbaum was not only the Whitechapel Murderer,
but also the murderer of Carrie Brown. Like Norris, Marriott
knew beforehand that nothing he proposed in his 50-minute
program could be proved and as it referred to the Brown murder,
overlooked basic case facts....all for a buck or two.
A British researcher named Tony McMahon wrote a book in 2024
proposing that Francis Tumblety was directly involved in the
assassination of Abraham Lincoln, America's worst 19th century
crime; the Whitechapel Murders; and the murder of Carrie Brown.
I'll leave it at without further comment. I've added two of
his programs to the next post.

Hold your nose...McMahon begins the first video with the claim
that Jack The Ripper
was the world's first serial killer.

On our YouTube channel, we've included a few of the programs
I've been slagging off for one reason and one reason only.
Other than our channel, no other Carrie Brown related channels
exist. It isn't like the Whitechapel Murders or the Lizzie
Borden
murder, with multiple channels devoted to them.
A link to this site and the FB page are included if interested
parties are so inclined.
