All records located by Nina Brown
Mary J. Miniter Born 1868 or 1869
In 1889, she was living at the East River Hotel.
She may have been living there years earlier. At the Coroner's
Inquest, she stated she had lived
there for 5 years. At the trial, she stated that she had lived
there for 7 months.
At the trial, Miniter was asked whether she was single. In 1891,
that was true.
However, she married a notorious local, Missouri-born, criminal
named Michael Lynch in 1889.
The marriage was interrupted when her husband of 25 days was
sent to prison.
No online records available to determine if the marriage was
annulled or when they divorced.
Miniter's parents emigrated to US from England ( Irish born ) in
early 1860s
Patrick Miniter, Father
Catherine McGonigle ( Mother's maiden name)
Patrick ( elder son, 1852 or 1853) was born in England and James
( 1857) was born in Ireland
Mary was born in New York City.
Found living at various places around 10th Street, NYC until
1870.
After 1870, family lived at 78 Nassau Street
In 1870 Census- Mary J. Miniter age listed as 0 years ( less
than 1 year old)
In 1880 Census- Mary J. 78 Nassau Street ( Family sans Father)
Aged 12
Father Patrick died in 1877 cholera
Patrick Jr.- no records after 1880
James died in 1887 was a peddler of perfumes, arrested in 1886.
Mother Catherine in 1894- she was a janitress ( cleaning woman
) living at 238 West 60th Street, NYC.
Marriage:
Married September 30, 1889 Manhattan
Husband Michael Lynch 23 born Missouri Parents Peter and
Ellen
Mamie Miniter, 19 years old Parents Patrick and Catherine
From Manhattan marriage records
Michael Lynch sent to prison October 25, 1889 Trenton State
Prison, Trenton NJ, for 7 years
He was released in or around 1896- Sentenced once again to
prison New York ( Sing Sing) for 7 years in 1897
Released in 1901. Remarried in 1904 and raised a family in New
Jersey, living into his 70s.

Miniter's husband had the "seven-year itch".
Each time he was sent to prison, it was for seven years ;D
This is the first time....
The crazy thing is, is that he was in jail just two weeks after
they got married.....at most a 14-day marriage.

His cot was still warm back in Trenton State Prison when he got
in trouble again.

Unrelated to Miniter,,,,probably....but an example of opium
joints in the Chatham Square neighborhood....the one mentioned
in this article just two blocks from Police Headquarters.
No recognizable names, but most of them were in the life, like
our Mary.
I wouldn't bet on the Sam Lee in the article being the man
Miniter ripped off. There were quite a few Sam Lee's in the
city.

James Miniter was Mary's older brother.
He died the following year.
