       To give folks an idea of what Tommy Thompson, Amer Ben Ali, and
       James M. Dougherty had to deal with
       when they were sent to the infamous prison. Ali was transferred
       from here by 1893. Dougherty was sent to
       Mattewan, where he first met Ali. Both were eventually sent to
       Dannemora.
       The expression 'sent up the river', is from the 19th century and
       meant that someone was sent to prison via
       the Hudson River to Sing Sing Prison in Ossining, NY 40 miles
       from the Lower East Side.
       I wouldn't last five minutes in that cell.
