One of the numerous hotel perks at the ERH is our famous Belgian
chocolate platter.

Number of rooms
Fourth floor of rooms- 15 actually the fifth floor of the
building
Third floor of rooms- 6 actually the fourth floor of
the building
Second floor of rooms 10 actually the third floor of the
building
First floor of rooms 5 actually the second floor of
the building
Ground floor 0 rooms - Bar, washroom, and
the lobby
36 functioning rooms at the hotel, according to Mary Corcoran
on May 13, 1891, at the Coroner's Inquest.

Eddie Fitzgerald
Sam Shine
At the trial, Mary was not asked to repeat the number of rooms
and their locations.
At the Trial, she mentions a 'Mr. Carroll' as being an employee
of
the hotel who handles the registration of guests as did Shine
and Thompson.
Fitzgerald registered Ali on the 22nd and 23rd. Miniter, not an
employee, registered Brown and C. Kniclo on the 23rd.
'Mr. Carroll' might have been Michael Conner.

At the trial, Mary was not asked to repeat the number of rooms
and their locations.
At the Trial, she mentions a 'Mr. Carroll' as being an employee
of
the hotel who handled the registration of guests as did Shine
and Thompson.
In the September 16, 1906 edition of the Evansville Courier, a
'Red Carroll' is mentioned as being
with Thompson, having a few drinks, on April 23rd.
The spelling of Carrol and Carroll are slightly different, but
almost certainly refer to the same man.

Not sure about anyone else, but the Courier article, written
anonymously, gives me the impression that the
author was present at the hotel on the 24th with other
reporters. There's too much in the article ( the entire
article) that leads me to that conclusion.
The sequence of events that night:
Thompson was behind the bar but drinking up the profits,
according to the Courier piece.
He gets hammered and assigns Shine to get behind the bar.
Fitzgerald would have been the person who signed Brown and C.
Kniclo in, but Shine
momentarily left his post. He tells Fitzgerald to get behind the
bar.
Since Fitzgerald is now behind the bar, he asks Miniter to
register Brown and C. Kniclo.
Fitzgerald was available to sign Ali in a while later.

Updated August 31, 2026, to include the prices for the rooms in
the swankiest spot on the Lower East Side.
Prices to the Rooms at the Hotel:
Fifty cents for the fourth floor ( Fourth of the floors with
available rooms...or the fifth of the entire building)
Seventy-five cents for the third and second floors ( or the
fourth and third floors of the entire building)
One dollar on the first floor ( or the second floor of the
building)

Note: Prices were for couples. A single room was 25 cents.

Howard, for completeness' sake: the women Meusbron and Lynch
were mentioned in articles as working at the hotel. Not
mentioned in the testimony, though, only in newspapers.
