Lizzie 'Clip' Carter : A Connecticut Girl On Water Street

I'm surprised to have found this one.
Lizzie Carter was one of the younger women who were picked up by
the police on April 24-25 and
were held as witnesses. She was a habitue of the East River
Hotel.
Where we read that she had been held in the house of a
detective, I'm almost positive that this meant
she was sent to what was known as 'O'Connor's Ranch'....a house
at 122 Roosevelt Street that was
utilized to house witnesses. Dublin Mary Briscoe, for one
example, spent time there during the early days of the
investigation.
To the left of the man and fire hydrant at the bottom of this
photo was 122 Roosevelt Street.
The photo, taken in the 1920s, is the intersection of Water
Street and Roosevelt Street.
Water Street runs straight up and under the Brooklyn Bridge in
the background.

It's unusual, at least I think, that Carter's mom came down to
the Lower East Side to see her
daughter. Hopefully, she returned to Connecticut with
her.....which Nina is looking into right now

Lizzie has been tough to track down. In 1891, one family is
listed by the surname Carter as living
on Veteran Street. The only female Nina could find does not fit
the bill.
Veteran Street was and is less than 200 yards long today.
There are a few references to events on Veteran Street that
ain't exactly reputable.
I found this from 1885.
If it was the Lizzie Carter in question, then she was 23 years
old in April 1891...being born in either 1868 or 1867.

Among her four hundred is a humorous slight aimed at Lizzie and
her associates.
The Four Hundred in 1890 was a reference to the financial elite
of New York City.

Presumably, she left for greener pastures on the Lower East Side
after her release from the jail in New Haven County.
She already had a lot of miles on her before she made that trip
to the Big Apple.

Pete:
She was either released from custody as a potential witness
before the Coroner's Inquest or attended
the Inquest hearing and wasn't called on to testify.
She didn't testify at the trial, either.

The first seven people taken to jail ( as potential witnesses)
on April 24th as reported
in the New York Evening World for April 25th, 1891 ( Two O'
Clock Edition ):
'George Francis' ( Frenchy ). The Evening World states he was
arrested as a witness and potential suspect.
Mary Reilly
Mary Lopez ( The Evening World misspelled her surname as
'Loisey" )
William Bekkle
Florence May
Alice Sullivan
and Lizzie Carter.
The Brooklyn Times-Union on April 25th listed only 6 witnesses
Frenchy
Mary Lopey ( sic )
Alice Sullivan
Willam Bekker
Mary Healy
and Lizzie Carter.
No Florence May or Mary Reilly.
By May 11th, the NY Evening World listed the following as being
in
the House of Detention...aka The Tombs:
Nellie English
Mary Healy
Mary Ann Lopez
Alice Sullivan
Mary Harrington
Mary Miniter
Dublin Mary Briscoe
Eddie Fitzgerald
and Lizzie Carter
