List Of Cranford Clubs

Not sure where to put this, Howard.
Was just wondering if there exists or you have considered
compiling a list of clubs and organizations in Cranford around
1890-1906?
Damon, it seems, was involved some of them. He's stated to have
been one of the founders of the Cranford Casino, which then
later became the Cranford Country Club, and the Homeowners Loans
and Savings (I forget the exact name). And of course he was
involved in the Golf Club.
He was a member of the Thief Detecting Society, and in 1916 his
widow is mentioned as prez. of the Village Improvement
Association.
There was a short-lived Cranford Camera Club 1888-1894 or
1889-1894 (both founding years are mentioned), also called the
Union County Camera Club of Cranford.
The Cranford Cyclers are mentioned as participating in the Union
County cycling championship in 1892.
Cranford Women's Christian Temperance Union
Ladies' Aid Society, Presbyterian Church, Cranford
Wednesday Morning Club (a women's club)
Cranford Boating Association
A theatre Society is also mentioned
Masonic Hall Association of Cranford
It seems New Jersey regularly published lists of corporations
filed with the state, in accordance with legal requirements.
Many clubs and societies would have filed under that law. Do you
know if such lists were published also in the 1890s?

Pete....offhand, I do not know but it is well worth looking
into.
I have a contact, Vic Bary, who contributes to the Cranford
Historical Society newsletter....he's a local historian
specializing in Cranford history.
I am enclosing the latest issue of the newsletter for you, at
bottom, in PDF.
I'll get to asking him the question you raised here.

Pete:
I just sent Vic an email.
By the way, there was a W.W. Mendell who was a member of the
Thief Detection Society.

I found the list of registered corporations 1899.
It lists:
Cranford Citizen
Cranford Electric Light and Water Co.
Cranford Game and Fish Protective Association
Cranford Golf Club
Cranford Mutual Telephone Company
Village Improvement Association of Cranford

From The Cranford Souvenir, 1894:
IN social advantages the town is well developed; there is a
well-managed Country Club;, with a pretty colonial clubhouse on
the banks of the river; there are all kinds of societies
connected with the churches, as well as those which are
indcpemlent ; and there is a Dramatic Club; of no mean ability.
The Wednesday Morning Club; (a book and literary association) is
a very admirably directed instituticm. Then there are tennis,
bicycling, baseball, bowling, an athletic and other clubs
devoted to amateur sport, including a boating association. A
thiifty Ivoyal Arcanum council and other lodges occupy the lodge
rooms in the Opera House Block, and a bright and enterprising
musical society — the Alcacus — furnishes delightful
entertainments of an operatic and musical nature.

Cranford Historian Vic Bary shared this with us today.
Dear Howard:
Attached is a list of Cranford clubs existing 1877 to 1920 I was
able to establish from our archives. Unfortunately, neither
George Damon* appears in membership lists (when they exist) for
those clubs.
Vic
* Note: I believe Vic meant to include John A. Lee as I also
asked about him.
Cranford Clubs 1877 – 1920:
Alcaeus Society: (Programs from performances at Cranford Opera
House 1893 -1897)
Azure Lodge of Masons: formed 1872, moved to Cranford about
1900. Many movers and shakers in Cranford were members or
officers.
Field & Stream Canoe Club: (pictured in 1911 postcard)
Cranford Casino: (1892 – 1934). Not a casino, rather a country
club membership by purchase of stock.
Cranford Choral Club: 1903 program in our files.
Cranford Golf Club: Founded in 1899. Many prominent Cranford
citizens were members.
Cranford Taft and Sherman Club: A Republican Party club, one
document from 1908 in our files.
Eclectic Club: Formed in 1870. No other information available
