George Damon's Memory

Taken from the four affidavits submitted by George Damon in
1901.
Let's look at what Damon remembered a decade after the murder
and departure of his farmhand....or alleged farmhand.
1. Remembers where he found the farmhand( Castle Garden)
2. Remembers that the man took charge of Damon's horses. The
other man had a broken arm at the time.
3. Remembers his first name as being Frank but not his surname
4. Remembers the time of day that he was told Frank was
incapable of work
5. Remembers his servant ( Mary Nasbit, unless Damon referred to
another maidservant at his house named Mary) found the key in a
table drawer.
6. Remembers the shirt he discarded had blood stains with one of
the shirt sleeves having large blood stains
7. Remembers being told by Mary that the tag of the key matched
the missing room key's tag.
8. Remembers that on the night Mary found the key and shirt and
that the tag on the key matched the one at the hotel, they
brought his attention to this. 'They' must mean Mary and Mrs.
Damon, Henry the other stableman, or some other resident of the
home.
9. The day after being told all this and the day after the
farmhand left Cranford, he took the key to work and asked him to
go with him
to the East River Hotel. Whether they went on the next day
after Damon took the key and went to work is unknown.
10. Remembers that he and Brennan went to the bar in the hotel
and ordered beer. A man left a key on the top of the bar and
left.
Damon matched the key he had to the key left by the man and
found that the key was similar to the key the man left.
11. Remembers the farmhand splicing ropes for him
12. 'Knows' that the man was a sailor because he had spliced
ropes. Damon didn't know what profession the farmhand had
engaged in before their meeting in March, it seems.
13. Remembers he was about 5'10", rather strong but not fleshy,
about thirty-five years old. Had a sullen disposition. In his
opinion, the farmhand was a Swede. The latter description of the
farmhand's nationality was in Damon's first affidavit.
14. Remembers the farmhand had brown hair, clean shaving(sic)
wearing no whiskers or mustache.
Damon states that the man had no mustache when he worked for
Damon in Cranford ( allowing for the days he went unshaven but
not with a fully formed mustache. This is from the third
affidavit.
15. Remembers when he had not shaved for a few days the farmhand
would show a very light growth and very light color.
16. Remembers he was about 175 or 180 pounds with square broad
shoulders.
17. Remembers he had a large flat nose, large eyes, and a low
forehead.
18. Remembers that the farmhand had a wide tattoo that went all
the way around his wrist.
The figures on the wrist were, in Damon's opinion, quite
fancy.
19. Remembers that the farmhand spoke fairly good English with a
foreign accent. Believed that he was either a Swede or now, in
this third
affidavit, a Dane.
20. Remembers that the Swede/Dane spoke German because he heard
him converse in German with some German people.
21. Remembers he had a little hitch in walking, one leg being
shorter than the other.
Numbers 14-21 all were included in Damon's third affidavit.

Looking at all the vividly recalled details of the farmhand
which pertained to his anatomy, from height to facial
characteristics ( no mustache ), that tattooed wrist, his
approximate weight, how he looked when Frank skipped a day or
two of shaving, large eyes, and low forehead, and the hitch to
the man's gait from a shorter leg, how is it possible that he is
accurately describing the man who was with Carrie Brown when
there are several red flags that demonstrate that it was another
man altogether?
His memory seems in order to me. ;D
