Another 'Panic of 1893'

The Panic of 1893 refers to the economic downturn in the United
States which began in 1893 and ended in 1897.
Coincidentally, the years 1893 through 1897 were the years in
which no organized effort to pardon Amer Ben Ali
was undertaken. The letters sent by Ali and transcribed by
others to the Governor during this time requesting a
release were solo efforts.
In September 1892, a man named Frank Rohle murdered a fellow
named Frank Paulson with an axe in the Lower East Side.
He was tried in Court by Judge Martine and at that time lawyers
Fred House and Manny Friend were assigned
to defend Rohle. Coincidentally, Judge Martine had assigned
House and Friend, along with Abe Levy, to represent
Ali in 1891.

The 'panic' I referred to was that Rohle avoided the hot seat
by escaping Sing Sing with another convicted murderer named
Pallister in April 1893.
Carlyle Harris had an opportunity to escape along with other
convicted murderers but decided against it.
These two links from Murder By Gaslight are worth perusing.
Even when the bodies of the two escapees were found, there is
still a mystery as to whether one convict killed the other and
then committed suicide.....or that they attempted to board a
vessel and were shot by an unknown party.
This escape created a major sensation in New York in 1893.
Thankfully, Bob Wilhelm condensed the two stories into the two
articles on his site. There are hundreds of articles on the
story.

Not to be outdone, two black convicts escaped Kings County
prison ( Brooklyn) two months later.
