In America, prisons are referred to as the 'slammer'.
These sketches came from Helen Campbell's 1897 book, Darkness &
Daylight.

The Tombs Women's Prison Or......The Damon Hotel
Several female prosecution witnesses such as Mary Miniter, Alice
Sullivan, Nellie English, Mary Ann Lopez, and Mary Harrington,
spent nearly two months in The Tombs ( For Women ) on Leonard
Street, NYC. 'Dublin Mary' Briscoe may have also been sent
there as she was present in court for certain. That would be at
least six women, if not more, spinning their wheels in jail
cells.
We can't blame George Damon for them being sent there, per
orders from Coroner Schultze. That was to prevent them from
scattering to the four winds. They were necessary for the
prosecution's case. Normally, female prisoners being held as
witnesses would wind up at 'O'Connor's Ranch, a house on
Roosevelt Street near the Brooklyn Bridge. But there were simply
too many women to keep in the corral.
Yet, you can blame Cranford's finest for the extended stay. Say
like for seven of those weeks.
If only the solid citizen had mailed the key and shirt to the
authorities as soon as he possessed them.
Sorry...I couldn't resist. ;)

Blackwell's Island Women's Section
Carrie Brown and several of the aforementioned women would make
the trip to The Island.
It's now called Roosevelt Island and is situated in the East
River.
Sort of like an East Coast Alcatraz.

Not sure where to mention this, but the St. Louis Post-Dispatch
1891-04-29 mentions, that Dublin Mary was picked up from the
"Plug Hat", a notorious dive in the fourth ward (mentioned by
Riis in How the Other Half Lives) and kept as a witness:

Pete:
What a coincidence.....last night I spent over an hour going
through Mrs. Campbell's book. That's an excellent book.
It's strange that that name...The Plug Hat....didn't show up
when I looked for it this morning in Manhattan papers.
My guess is that it was definitely in the area below Chatham
Square and quite likely on Water Street.....the dateline is
from New York....so I don't think the St. Louis paper invented a
bar with that name.
I'll see if I can locate it.

I may have misread Riis, I think he’s saying Plug Hat was on
West Side:
