**Tommy Thompson : 1890 Sketch In A Medical Advertisement**

Tonight, Nina casually browsed for another East River Hotel
photo. She switched gears and began looking for material on
Tommy
Thompson.
She found the following article, actually an advertisement for
Drs. Copeland and Blair's Eye, Ear, Throat, and Lung cure. She
found a sketch of Thompson.
This is the first time anyone has ever identified him by means
of a photo or as in this case, a sketch. Well done Nina !!!
Thompson is registered twice in the 1889-1890 New York City
Directory. I discovered this tonight. The arrows indicate the
dual addresses he gave.
The advertisement claims he is well and favorably known in
addition to being a saloon keeper. Of course, at the time of the
Brown Murder, he was a manager at the hotel. We haven't been
able to ascertain if he was a saloon-keeper as in he owned a
saloon. 231 and 233 East 96th Street are shown in the photo.
The sketch doesn't show his right ear, the one which is missing
a chunk according to an article in 1900.
Nina found his will, dated October 29, 1896. His address was
233 E. 96th Street. He left his possessions to his wife,
Elizabeth A. Thompson. He had no children. I've included the
excerpt from his contentious Coroner Inquest testimony of May
13, 1891.
He died on January 5, 1897. He was listed as 43. He was either
born in 1853 or 1854. He gave his age as 39 at the Inquest which
is at odds with the records. Thompson is buried at Cypress
Hill Cemetery in Brooklyn.

Pete:
I looked through at least 20 different ads for Coleman and
Blair ( 1890 only ) and every advertisement featured respectable
persons, male
and female. The only one who was shady was Thompson. How in the
hell did they latch on to this guy???
Well, by January 1891....ads for Coleman and Blair ceased to
appear in Manhattan newspapers.
Before Thompson appeared in the ad, these two fellows challenged
Coleman and Blair's advertising.

Then in mid-1891, Coleman and Blair show up in this column.
Seems they were snake oil salesmen.
