This archive does not contain nominative data beyond 1904. If
Ali had died before 1904, his name might be in here somewhere.
I've contacted someone with expertise concerning passenger lists
on the La Touraine, the ship Ali took back to Le Havre before
heading to Algieria....or so the prevailing theory goes. He may
have just stayed in France after departing although one of the
conditions of his release was that he go to Algeria where the
French had a job waiting for him.
Once he arrived in France, there's no guarantee that he went
back home.
You've gotta start somewhere, so I'll add archival sites to this
thread in the hope that he can be traced to Algeria after April
24, 1902.
His village or municipality was Beni Aicha.
A few different ways of spelling his name: Amir Ben Ali...Amer
Ben Ali...or Ameer Ben Ali.
I think that the 'Ameer Ben Ali' spelling is an Anglicisation of
his name...we've seen 'Amer Ben Ali' used several times after
the trial and in case files.

Hi How,
You’ve probably already gone through this but there’s an Ammar
Ben Ali at 412 and an Ali Ben Ammar at 484. That’s about as
close as I can see.
As you’ve said, he might have gone off the radar after landing
in France and I couldn’t imagine much effort being made to track
him down. A case of good riddance I’d have thought.
Hats off to you both as ever for trying to track him down. I’m
guessing that there are no Algerian researchers on JtRForums. ;D

I've contacted a fellow who has an Algerian mariners blog, but
haven't heard anything from him.
I've also contacted Abdelouaheb Aissaoui, an award winning
Arabic-language author. He was once a member, but didn't post,
of JTR Forums. I remember registering him.

A couple of remarks by Abdelouahab this morning....
I called a friend who knows the mayor of Ben Aisha, sent him the
information and the photo, and he himself will go to the mayor
and look for information about Amer Ben Ali.
Years ago, I was thinking of writing a novel about Amer Ben Ali
(in Arabic), and now you have renewed this idea for me.
I sent him the photo that Pete Damgaard found.

I looked through a lot of stuff at the French Gallica site, the
national library’s scans of newspapers and other materials.
I found surprisingly little written about the case - surprising
because the French-American community was, as we know, so
heavily invested in the case, and French consulate assisted.

Thanks, Pete. I've taken a stab at Gallica in the past and
found nothing of value related to the query.
Hopefully, Abdel will be able to come up with something from
that request from two weeks ago.
It is unusual that we've been unable to find out anything.
I gave the name of the ship(La Touraine), the arrival point(Le
Havre), and the name of Ali's village(Beni Aischa) to Abdel.
It's possible something is sitting in the French consulate
records in Paris.

We also know his wife’s name, as I recall?
It was mentioned in one or several of the papers. Cannot
remember it right now, but it may be relevant for anyone looking
at Algerian records
