150 years ago this past February, there was a murder that took
place right outside Speckman's 531 Broome Street saloon ( also
considered a dive like the Oak & Oliver joint) in the Soho
       neighborhood on the west side.
The building is still there and wasn't demolished like so many
       others in Manhattan.
Article from February 1874. The shooter died in prison less
       than two years later.

James Jennings, proprietor of the East River Hotel. Two
       addresses.
That house on 241 Henry Street, which is one mile from the East
River Hotel, where he is listed as living in, may have been
demolished, since the building currently at 241 Henry is listed
as having been built in 1900, nine years after the murder.
Henry Street is three blocks from Water Street.
No doubt some have seen a reference to Jennings being a
respectable 'uptown' churchgoer in the papers.
Guy runs one of the most well-known flophouses in the Lower East
Side and he's a respected churchgoer.
Sounds like a member of the US Republican Party.

Heinrich Stiehler, owner of the property after Herman Jaeger,
       listed at 16 Catherine Slip.
       This listing from 1893.
Looking at the photo of the East River Hotel that Nina found, a
man is wearing an apron like a butcher would wear.
Stiehler was a butcher. It might be Stiehler standing with
       Jaeger in the picture.
It might have been a bartender, too.

In 1886, he had a joint on Cherry Street...at most, a
four-minute walk to 16 Catherine Slip.
