Philbin, The Affiants, And Odell - 1901

A few articles pertinent to events in the following year.
Here, Philbin is undecided about whether or not to favor the
application of a pardon for Ali.
At that time, Brennan had filed his affidavit and Damon had
filed the first of his four. Lee and Jennings had not.

It's unknown which people attended this assemblage of affiants
or if only a few attended it.
Philbin is conducting things by the book.

At the time of this article's publication, Damon had yet to
mention the term 'Dane' in an affidavit.
That would surface in the July 2nd affidavit, some 11 days later
in his third affidavit.
Yet, its found in this article.

Ali prayed for Odell's victory at the polls.
Ali considers being a museum freak upon his release.
Philbin acquiesces due to the number of affiants and passes the
buck to Odell.
According to the reportage, he shrunk 8 1/2 inches.
I haven't come across any letters from this born liar that he
claimed to have sent Odell.

Last article from 1901.
Where to begin?
Leon was a tutor to a young man in Manhattan. Not sure if he was
a Professor at that time(1891)
It means Elbogen, Martin, Sultan, Aloncle, and Sperco were
either incapable of speaking their native tongue or Leon and Ali
were full of shit.
There's nothing in the truncated affidavit submitted below by
this man who should have titled himself as a Professor.
Rather than declare that he was a Professor, he opted to label
himself as an instructor merely tutoring some guy in the city.
Albert Leon
State of New York, County of New York
Albert J. Leon, being duly sworn says: That at the time of the
Frenchy trial in the county of New York, he was engaged as
instructor of Arabic to Archer M. Huntington, now of No. 2 East
57th Street, Borough of Manhattan, New York.
[[That he attended a session of the Frenchy trial at which the
accused
Frenchy was examined. That he heard a number of questions put to
the interpreter for translation to Frenchy in Arabic, that he
heard the
translation of the same given by the interpreter; that at that
time he
was familiar with the English and Arabic languages, as also with
the
Algerian slang made up of Arabic, French, Italian, and Spanish
which
Frenchy spoke, that he heard the answers made by Frenchy in the
slang
above referred to, as also the translation of the answers by the
interpreter
of the court*. That deponent noticed at the time that
questions to Frenchy and answers by Frenchy were incorrectly
translated
and that the translation of the questions and answers were
misleading to
the prejudice of Frenchy, that deponent therefore
prepared a card stating his name.......]]
Unfortunately, the second page of the affidavit is missing, and
as a
result, is left undated. It seems more than likely it was
prepared between 1897 and 1901.
* The translator was a fluent speaker of the Arabic language,
Emile Sultan.
In fact, Sultan was specifically chosen by French Consul in
Manhattan, Comte Paul d'Abzac...not by an instructor of boys.

Time to backtrack, folks.
Leon did not call himself a Professor at the time of his
affidavit. That was done by the reporter.
This is the man he was tutoring in 1891 and who was very
prominent in New York and all across America, Archer Huntington:

Howard, besides the name, is there anything pointing to him
being a printer?
I’ve found more than one Albert J. Leon, so I’m not sure his
profession can be concluded just from the name.

Buddy, I think you have the right man.
I'm going to remove the reference to him being a lithographer.
The main reason is what are the chances that two men are named
Albert J. Suleyman or Suleiman and also known as Albert J. Leon?
Again, good work, Pete.
