In Underwood's Gaslight Lawyers, he refers to Mary Ann Lopez as
being 'Dublin Mary'
Not a hard mistake to make as the New York Evening World
featured a column referring to both Lopez and Mary Briscoe as
being Dublin Mary within 50 words of the other.
This one from the New York Sun labeled Mary Healy ( there was no
Mamie Haley) as being Dublin Mary.
Mary Healy testified at the trial and neither was she Dublin
Mary.

Mary Briscoe was Dublin Mary and she did not testify at the
trial.
Now that that's settled....take a look at how the Evening World

First, it gives her address as 12 Roosevelt Street - I don't
think I've seen that before.
Second, it claims she was Ali's lover - or Frenchy nr. 2's? -
until barber Decenwether took over!?! Have you seen that claim
before, Howard?
It clearly explains why Decenwether was in Speckman's back room
with Dublin Mary, as he explained to the polie.

think I've seen that before.
At first, I thought that was the address of Capt. O'Connor's
'house' where witnesses were stashed on Roosevelt Street,
Pete.....but
the house O'Connor used was 122 Roosevelt...corner of Water &
Roosevelt...across from Bartmer's store on Water.
So, unless that was a typo in the paper for 122 and not 12, that
could be her address. 12 Roosevelt Street is right above
Madison Street and below Park Row....near Chatham Square.
Second, it claims she was Ali's lover - or Frenchy nr. 2's? -
until barber Decenwether took over!?! Have you seen that claim
before, Howard?
Apparently, Briscoe and Ali were lovey dovey at one time.....but
that ended when he assaulted her at Harrington's ( see
Harrington testimony
in this link:

Briscoe and Ali were chummy in June 1890, if what Harrington
said on the stand was true.
Yes, Decenwether and Briscoe were together ( N Y Herald, April
28) at Speckman's. Whether or not the part about Decenwether
'supplanted' Ali is true is another thing.
Don't forget, she was a prostitute. Their boyfriends are
boyfriends until the boyfriend's money runs out.

Not to sound like a putz, but the Washington Times article
referring to Mary Briscoe operating
a disorderly house.....is supposed to be her operating one in
Manhattan, correct?

Roosevelt Street no longer exists, having been eliminated in the
mid to late 1950's to make
way for the Al Smith Homes.
This is a photo from 1910. 12 Roosevelt was 4 doors to the left
from the restaurant.

12 Roosevelt is all the way down on the right, next to the
lighter-colored building... pre-1950.

Pete....I found a few articles in which her address was listed
as 12 Roosevelt, beside the one you found.
This Mary Briscoe might be a little too old. She was picked up
in Manhattan's Central Park.

Our Mary, if the NYPD Census for 1890 was correct, was 25 years
old
and lived at 383 Water Street. I'll get the listing shortly.

Here's a Mary Briscoe....25 years old....at 383 Water in the
1890 NYPD Census.
383 was two doors from 387 Water, the Hotel's other address.
There are no Briscoes in the 1890-1891 NY City Directory who
live near the hotel.
There is one 'Mary', a widow, who appears in the 1891-1892 NY
City Directory....but doesn't live remotely close the area.
Pete....we can't be sure, but unless Briscoe moved to Roosevelt
Street by 1891 and managed to avoid being listed in the
city directory, I think she was living on Water Street at the
time of the murder.

Not sure I follow, Howard. Why should we discount the newspapers
telling us she lived at 12 Roosevelt when she was arrested in
1891?
If the Mary Briscoe in the 1890-directory is her, then by 1891
she had moved.
