This will blow your mind....
The original shoreline on the East Side generally ran along
contemporary Pearl and Cherry streets.
The East River waterfront shifted to Water Street in 1730, Front
Street in 1780, and finally, South Street in 1800.
In short, everything below the black line ( Pearl and Cherry
Streets connected) was not originally part of the Lower East
Side or Manhattan landmass.... including the corner of Catherine
Slip and Water Street.

That’s a fair chunk of land How. I don’t know how it compares in
area to the Thames Embankment created in around 1870 as far as
area goes. I know that there’s a watergate at York House in
London which tells how far the river used to reach in width and
I think that’s around 150 yards back from the river today so it
looks like the East Side is a larger land mass. The Thames was
done all in one go though whereas the East Side shoreline
increased over time. New York grew basically.
