I do not know, but being from Ireland, it’s likely his parents
were catholic. I would therefore presume that he was, too.
Perhaps his mother’s funeral is noted elsewhere - there were two
Catholic Churches in Kingston, I think, Holy Cross and St
John’s.
I’m looking for Kingston newspapers but don’t know if they’re
online - Ulster County Gazette or similar, may have mentioned
it.
EDIT: I should add that I noticed his wife was buried in a
methodist episcopal graveyard, so she at least was not catholic

Nothing on John A Lee yet but I did find info on Ella. Her name
was switched on the 1860 census.
Ella Augusta Ketcham Lee

How annoying - finding the baptism and they left out the A :(
Thanks for your effort!
My only idea would be perhaps finding their marriage? We know
they married before 1880. Ella was born 1853 so probably married
around 1872-74?
Perhaps the full name is given on a marriage record.

Marriage
May 1, 1880
John A Lee & Ella A Ketcham
I Checked all of John's Siblings baptism records and all are
listed with middle names except for Ellen and John. They were
the 2 oldest.
Also Ellen and John are not listed in 1850, 1855, 1860 census'
with middle initials yet their siblings are. In 1865 census they
are listed as Ellen A (24, teacher) and John A (22, Clerk) along
with the family. ???

What do all these people have in common?
Harry S. Truman- President of the United States ( 1945-1952)
David O. Selznick- MGM Studio head, producer of Gone With The
Wind
Joanne K. Rowling ( J.K. Rowling)
Answer: None of them were born with a middle name. The initial
is for show. It stands for nothing other than that.
I mentioned this possibility to Nina over a week ago concerning
the John A. Lee problem.
Just a thought.

Thank you, guess the only thing left to find is his death
record!

It’s a possibility but another thing they have in common is
being born much later than John A Lee.
That John A Lee should have decided at 22 to start using an
empty initial seems strange to me. But it.s possible, I guess.
Perhaps something to do with the civil war, military records or
something.

Pete:
John Lee was a more common name than John A. Lee. Maybe he took
a middle initial to distinguish himself from other men named
John Lee.

yes, that seems a likely explanation, only thing giving me pause
is his sister, deciding at the same time to sport an initial.
From what Nina found, Ellen and John did not have an initial,
and not because it was forgotten or left out by mistake, as
their siblings had theirs listed.
So it really seems like Ellen and John sometime between 1860 and
1865 decided they too wanted an initial.
Maybe they were always meant to have a middle name but the
priest left it out from the baptism. And only when they became
adults did they start using what had until then only been an
informal middle name.
Nina, did you find Ellen’s baptism record? Is it also middle
nameless?
I don’t know - we can come up with various scenarios to explain
it but ultimately we cannot know until further info is
uncovered.
Seems we,ve exhausted the online sources so whatever extra info
will probably have to come from physical archives.
In the process, I think we’ve found a little bit extra info on
John A Lee and his family (did you notice his father-in-law
living with them in the 1885 census?), so that’s always nice.
Remains the question of when he died. Ultimately the specifik
name itself is unimportant- whether it was Adam or Abraham or
Aidan - but if we do find it one day, it may help us find more
info on John A Lee.
