Hmm, but the as the story goes, the attorney Lee spoke to had
been involved in the Ali-case. Surely Ely wasn't?
Just found this story, from NY Times, September 10, 1899:

Real Estate record and builders' guide, sept. 16, 1899:

A paper manufacturer - would probably be well known to a printer
like Damon.
The laywer for the William Wilkinson company, Jehiel Tuttle
Hurd, later appears as Lee's own lawyer, as he attempts to sell
his Forest Avenue home in 1901.

One article stated that the attorney in the alleged conversation
was involved, while a couple of others do not make that
distinction.
Smith Ely, Jr. played no part in the case, boss....just a letter
writer in 1901/1902.

Lee’s mother’s death was reported in the Kingston Daily Freeman
on dec 24 1907.
Gives her full name as Mary Ann Lee, age 87.

So she was born in either 1820 or 1819 if the date in the paper
was a year off...or the census was off by a year.

How come one census has her born 1834, and either in Maine or
Ireland?
Very strange.
For her death to be reported in Kingston, and her to buried
there, there must be some family connection. Perhaps her husband
came from Kingston.

The Lee family immigrated to New York in June 1840 from
Liverpool on the Ship Oxford
Peter 25 and wife Mary 19
Jerry 20
Jeramiah 22
John 20 with wife Julia 26 and children Catherine 3, Mary 2,
Jerry 3m.
(Looks like 4 brothers)
One of the the brothers lists his birth in Cork County, Ireland
They settled in Rosendale, Ulster County, New York and are
listed on census' 1850,1855,1860. Owned a farm valued at $2000
Moved to Kingston, Ulster County, New York census 1865 (Peter
not listed with family, Could have something to do with the
civil war)
On 9 Dec. 1868 Peter died
1870 Census I find the family in Catskill, Greene County, New
York, where John is listed as a stone dealer.
1875 and 1880 census' the family is in Brooklyn, again John is
listed as stone dealer.
Peter and Mary Ann had 9 children which helped a lot in tracing
the family.
John A Lee was born in 1843 Ulster County, New York

So, the "A" remains elusive?
Weird that the census information is so unreliable for this
family - the mother and the son being years off their actual
birth year.
Did you happen upon Lee's wife's full name? Ella something
Do you know when he died?

Father: Barnard Ketcham / Mother: Mary
John A Lee was still alive in 1909.
I can not find what the A stands for in Ella's name. I also can
not find out what the A stands for in John's name. I managed to
find out what 7 of his siblings middle initials stood for, none
of which start with A.

Amazing that one letter should be so difficult!
Ella A. K. Lee became a teacher, hired by NYC on May 21st, 1892,
until she died 1909.
Her address in various years:
Directory of Teachers 1900: 429 Greene Avenue
NYC Record 1901: 29 St. John's Place. (same place as Kitty
Genovese lived, I believe).
Directory of Teachers 1903: 404 Franklin Avenue
NYC Record 1906: 283 Ryerson Street (this also lists her
original date of employment as 1874)

Thank you for that information, I had no idea she was a teacher
for that long.
Any idea what religion John A Lee was? If Catholic a baptism
certificate could solve the mystery. I tried to find his birth
record in Ulster county only to find that they started in 1847.
