Sorry, I just reread the first page of this thread, and Lee’s
birth year, marriage etc is listed. I’d just completely
forgotten.
My apologies, Nina already knew the mother’s name. In the census
she’s listed as born Ireland 1834, but when she died the
Chronicle says she was 88, putting her birth at 1819. Quite a
difference?
John A Lee, born 1852, if his mother was in fact born 1834 she
would have been 18 when he was born? Not impossible, but
unlikely?
Also, in one census from the mother is listed as born Maine, in
another born Ireland?
Could there be two different Mary A Lee?
The census information for this family seems all over the place,
mixing up wife and mother.
The wife apparently is away quite a lot, perhaps they separated
at times, but even though she’s not in the 1905 census with him,
in 1907 the Chronicle mentions her as Mrs John a Lee of forest
avenue.
Frustrating! Nina found Lee had brothers and sisters, do any of
them give a clue as to the A.?

P.S.....if John A. Lee had a place at 198 Broadway in
1880....that would make him a 'Broadway merchant'.

From: New York Supreme Court, General term, first department,
1892

The trial concerned ownership of some tools and drills and
whatnot, used during construction of the Croton aqueduct. John
Flanagan v. John O’Brien and Henan Clark, started in 1889 and
appealed all the way to the NY Supreme Court.
Flanagan won, court ruling January 12 1892.

I have to apologize again, I got my years mixed up.
Mrs. John A Lee had tonsillitis in 1894, not 1907.

One question.....what was the first name of the attorney who
gave a direct examination of John A. Lee? It says he was
examined by an 'Ely'.
Was it Smith Ely?

It was W. H. H. Ely - do you know him?
There's also this other case, where he was working for Henan
Clark and managing some lease of a lot or something.

The reason I asked is that the former Mayor of New York, Smith
Ely, Jr. ( 1877-1878) wrote two letters to Governor Odell in
late 1901 and
in 1902 as Ali was about to be released. The first letter was a
request to consider releasing Ali and the second was a 'thank
you' note to Odell
for releasing him. He's in the book we're working on.
It occurred to me that maybe the attorney who John A. Lee
allegedly had a conversation with might have been Smith Ely, who
I think
was still in practice in 1892. He retired in 1895 from public
service.
