       Perverted Justice

Took me long enough, but I finally tracked down an article that
was critical of Damon for standing on the sidelines so long.
Wonder what the author of the article would think if he knew
       what we now know.

       -Mike Banks-
Me too, Mike. That is if all of Damon's story was true, which
       it isn't.
He may have gone to the East River Hotel with Brennan but for
another purpose than what he claimed.
Damon's trip to the hotel, if true, was to examine the keys in
order to manufacture one, not to match the key ha 'had' to one
       from the hotel.
He did not need to put himself to the trouble of going to the
hotel since his maid, Mary Nasbit, told him early on that the
number on the key matched the one being described
in the newspapers. In addition, that the hired hand allegedly
left a bloody shirt, with copious blood on the sleeves, should
have been enough for anyone to put two and two together, even a
       country club clown like Damon.
Yet, ...alas....He screwed up and made a brass one, the kind he
brought to Robillard, as he states here in his first affidavit
       :
It was an ordinary brass key of the cheap kind and had a tag on
       it numbered No. 31
Compare it to what former owner James Jennings said about
fifth-floor keys in his affidavit :
That the brass key shown him, deponent, in the presence of Mr.
Robillard, counsel for the prisoner, so
far as he is aware, was never used in the hotel of which he was
then the proprietor; that Room 31 was on
the top floor; that as far as he has any recollection all the
rooms on that particular floor, at the time of
said murder, had iron keys with brass oblong tags attached
This is all of what Jennings had to say about the keys :
That the brass key shown him, deponent, in the presence of Mr.
Robillard, counsel for the prisoner, so
far as he is aware, was never used in the hotel of which he was
then the proprietor; that Room 31 was on
the top floor; that as far as he has any recollection all the
rooms on that particular floor, at the time of
said murder, had iron keys with brass oblong tags attached: that
the keys on the other three floors of the
hotel were some of brass and some of iron: that all the keys had
brass tags- some round and scalloped,
some oblong, some may have even been square, but all the tags
varied from about an inch to an inch and
a half long, and from an inch to an inch and a half wide, and
that no tag was as small as the one on the key
       now produced.
Damon went to the hotel without a key, if this particular idea I
have is correct, and upon seeing one, which was from another
floor, and certainly not from the position he and Brennan
       claimed
they did by looking at a key board in the basement....that he
made a copy to the best of his ability.....but...alas...poor
George made a key in the style that the Hotel used but on a
floor other than the fifth floor where the murder occurred.

Excellent point made in this one about Damon's reticence in
       coming out earlier.
