The Sixth Excuse

Reading one of the documents Damon signed, I came across this :
I don't recall reading this one in the papers.
1- Fear of the effects upon his reputation
2. He felt Ali would be better off in an institution
3. He felt Ali deserved to be off the streets, regardless of
any complicity in the murder, and was worried about his
well-being.
4. Upon conferring with John R. Lee, Damon took Lee's advice
and steered clear of any involvement...in other words, don't get
involved.
5. A fear of some sort of violence at the hands of the
Farmhand should he turn in the key.
Make that six excuses... 6. Felt the prosecution case
wouldn't succeed anyway

Why all the bullshit excuses? The worst of which, IMO, is the
one I found in one of his affidavits.....that he, as did John A.
Lee in his affidavit, felt that Ali would never be convicted.
Well....this doesn't explain why upon Ali's conviction ( Nice
guess, guys...) that Damon didn't rush forward right then and
there with the key and the story.
Why didn't Damon go to the authorities and give them what would
have been a very acceptable reason for not coming forward such
as to the likely effect that knowledge of Carrie Brown's
murderer actually having been in Cranford would have on the
future development of his beloved town?
Would it not be reasonable to consider that potential homeowners
might think twice about relocating there? How about future
developers? After all, Cranford was considered a model
community convenient for commuters to Manhattan. This excuse for
standing on the sidelines would be far more believable coming
from a man like Damon, who was involved in the community with
three teenage sons, and who had been a resident of Cranford for
years, more so than the volume of excuses he came up with.
Damon would be revealing this information to people in prominent
social positions such as he was not farmhands or derelicts from
Water Street.
That excuse would resonate with these fellow upper-echelon
individuals who also lived outside the noisy and bustling
metropolis and could identify with the need to maintain the
appearance as well as the status quo of this idyllic suburb in
Union Count far easier than those he did provide.
