I finally found a picture that has to have The East River Hotel
in it somewhere. It's a 1876 Panorama shot of NY with the
Brooklyn Bridge Tower in the middle. I haven't examined it yet
but it's supposed to be high definition and the original is
supposedly 7 feet long.

The row of homes in front are on South Street.
The street behind it would be Water Street, running from left to
right
The Hotel might be underneath the arrow, obscured by the larger
homes on South Street.
Good try on your part, YF.

Urban renewal found all those buildings on South Street
eventually razed....
The red dot indicates the intersection of Catherine Slip & Water
Street with the current edifice on the former hotel site
directly to the right of the dot :

That looks right. I eyeballed the angle from the tower with my
hand and the angle looks just right.
Did they put Catherine Slip through later on (as a slip for
boats?) to South St?
It looks like they call the western end, of what was Water St,
Catherine Slip now so it meets itself in a T.

This is a contemporary map of the Lower East Side's 4th Ward
waterfront
The star is the location of the Hotel

The two dark lines represent the bridge span across to Brooklyn
and the star, once more, is the Hotel.

The docks were actually situated on South Street. The ships
docked on South Street and the ass-end of Catherine Slip.
Author Luc Sante ( 'Low Life', 1991 ) wrote that there had been
incidents where people were murdered and then jettisoned through
the basement of the ERH into the East River, but I find that
impossible. For one thing, it's too far away from the dock as
we can see.

All the other pictures of the Brooklyn Bridge under construction
are from the wrong angle. They are from the north west side or
show the north west side. Or show the Brooklyn side.
Here, even if Catherine Slip was put through to South St, The
East River Hotel would still be obscured. I guess we'll have to
be satisfied with your roof top teaser for now!
PS. With all those rooftops, I might have to reconsider my
Orangutan Theory!

It should read, "Underneath the green arrow is a building on the
southwest corner of Catherine Slip which may be the East River
Hotel".

If you go by the triangular docks, we might just be looking up
James Slip instead of Catherine Slip and the Hotel is just out
of the picture.

You're probably right....Nina also thinks the building I
'designated' is too close to the bridge.
The southwest corner of James Slip and Water Street is marked
with the pyramid. The corner of Catherine Slip and Water Street
with the star.
