       A Chain of Events 1888-1902
1- James Dougherty develops an obsession with American stage
       actress Mary Anderson around 1882.
       2. In 1888, he is arrested by the NYPD ( Her stepfather went to
the police to complain about him following her)
       3. Mary Anderson 'begs' Inspector Byrnes not to arrest Dougherty
       4. Byrnes hands him over to doctors who take Dougherty to Ward's
       Island to let them decide.
       5. Dougherty is diagnosed as insane. He is sent to the Kings
County ( Flatbush ) Asylum in late 1888.
       6. He escapes in September 1890. After ten days on the lam, he
is officially discharged according to the rules of the asylum.
       7. He returns to the asylum on September 26th and asks for his
       possessions.
Since he was officially discharged, the asylum cannot hold
him. They hand over his possessions.
       8. On October 9, 1890, he goes back to the asylum and murders a
       Dr. Lloyd.
He was put on trial and sentenced to life imprisonment by
Judge Bartlett in Brooklyn's Court of Oyer & Terminer,
The murder took place in Brooklyn, then a separate city from
       New York,
Had the murder taken place across the river in Manhattan, he
could have faced the death penalty.
He was sent to Sing Sing prison.
       9. From Sing Sing, he was sent to Matteawan State Asylum in
       Fishkill, NY.
       10. He may have met Amer Ben Ali in Sing Sing ( July 10th-July
27th, 1891 ), and definitely ran into him at
Matteawan. The two were sent to Dannemora Prison in Clinton,
N.Y. in 1901. Ali was in Sing Sing from
July 10th to July 27th, the latter date on which he was
       shipped off to Auburn Prison.
       11. While in Matteawan, Dougherty either read one of the 3 New
       York newspapers published in
early June 1901 ( NY Tribune, Times, or Sun) that brought up
the new 'evidence' designed to get
Ali pardoned, as well as the name of the person bringing up
       this new evidence, George Damon.
Either that or he was informed of the details of the 1901 pardon
       campaign, including Damon's name,
his story about the farmhand, and other specifics, by someone
       affiliated with the asylum.
Dougherty knew details within the Damon story that could only
have come to him by either one of these two means.
Dougherty and Ali were both in Dannemora in 1901, and according
       to Dougherty, on friendly terms.
       12. Dougherty doesn't buy the Damon story and writes a letter
       directly to Governor
Odell, dated June 22nd, 1901. He outlines what he sees as
suspicious elements in the Damon story. He even
suggests to Governor Odell that Damon be shown a photograph of
       Ali for comparative purposes.
That is precisely what was done on July 13th, exactly three
weeks after Dougherty wrote to Odell.
       13. The Governor read his letter and immediately reacted. Keep
in mind this was a letter from an insane
       patient in an asylum.
       14. Odell sends the Dougherty letter to NY D. A. Eugene Philbin.
Philbin shows it to pardon campaign
coordinator Ovide Robillard and newsman Robert Gordon Butler.
Butler immediately writes back to Odell
on July 2nd, detailing things he found to be incorrect in
Dougherty's letter. Meanwhile, two photos of Ali, one in
       profile
and one full-face, were located at Matteawan Asylum. Odell had
the photos sent to Philbin to show to Damon.
       15. Odell also asks Philbin to have Damon provide a description
       of his former farmhand.
Up until now, Damon had not given a facial description of the
farmhand from the day he came out of the
woodwork with his story some 100 plus days earlier to this point
       in time.
Damon submits his 3rd affidavit on July 2nd, with a description
of his farmhand's facial features, among other things.
Just 11 days later on July 13th, he files his fourth and final
affidavit stating he has seen Ali's photographs and that they do
       not resemble his farmhand.
       16. The facial features do not match those of the man last seen
with Carrie Brown, the man we know
by the fictitious name, C. Kniclo.
Damon's farmhand had a flat nose, a hitch in his gait, and most
importantly, no moustache, according to Damon's
sworn affidavit of July 2nd, an affidavit prompted by the letter
written to the Governor by James Dougherty.
The facial description Damon swore to does not resemble the
description provided by Mary Miniter, a habitue of
the East River Hotel and the only person to see both Carrie
Brown and the man we know as C. Kniclo enter the
hotel on the night of the murder.
Miniter's description remains constant, with the lone exception
being that she thought he had light-colored eyes since
his skin was of a fair complexion, from April 24th to the day
she took the witness stand, June 30th, at Ali's trial.
Miniter's description was that of a man with a long, sharp nose,
and a light ( colored) full mustache. This sketch is
published in the April 25th edition of the New York Sun.
       17. Nevertheless, the Governor released Ali in April 1902.

He asked for his possessions with a gun in his hand, one might
note. So not only was he not a patient there, it would probably
have been quite dangerous to try and detain him.
As for his knowledge of the pardon effort, I found it
interesting how he states that Damon is the kind of man who
would never acknowledge that Ali had worked for him, if asked
       fair and square.
Read literally, he's intimating that he knows Damon. I think
he's only imagining what Damon must be like, and of course he's
mad as a hatter, but he does make it sound like he knows
       something about Damon, doesn't he?

He may have been just expressing his opinion on Damon having sat
on his hands for a decade and that a man like that wasn't to be
       trusted.
