NEW HISTORY OF THE CREATION AND PERPETUATION OF THIS WORLD OF
OURS.
Being a Brief Compendium of the Universe, the matter that
composes it, and the force that rules it.
Part One:
Carbondale (Pa) Advance

The universe is continuous throughout, differing only as to
density of its component portions. The planets, as our earth,
and in fact all bodies, are condensed portions; between these
bodies a more attenuated medium exists. All visible bodies are
greater or lesser immense compound magnets, composed of
innumerable indestructible magnetic "atoms," each of which is
surrounded by an envelope of static electricity, inside of which
no other body can enter. Being a magnet, every "atom" in the
universe necessarily attracts or repels every other atom in the
universe with a force directly proportional to its quantity and
quality of matter, and decreases as the square of the distance
increases. When these two forces equally counter-act upon each
other an equilibrium is established between the atoms. When the
attractive force preponderates, it causes synthesis. When the
repellant force preponderates, it causes analysis. An
equilibrium may be said to exist between the atoms of the normal
matter of space, also approximately in matter diffused through
the atmosphere which forms our sky.
Dynamic laws prove Newton's theory of gravitation to be wrong,
as no universal force can exist without a counter-force to
equalize it. The great prime forces of nature are these
attractive and repellent magnetic forces. All other forces are
allotropic forms of these great forces. If we stop the motion of
a moving body, we produce heat. Heat is motion. It is an
acceleration of the motion of the molecules of the substance to
which it is imparted, so that we but change the motion from
visible motion to invisible motion. Again, motion produces
electricity; while electricity produces motion. Electricity also
produces magnetism; magnetism produces motion. Motion and
magnetism produce electricity doubly. Everything is undergoing
continual changes of form, though nothing is created, nothing
wasted—all is motion.
This paper is in motion; each molecule it contains is making
billions of movements every second of time. It is these motions
which cause the cohesion of the particles and its apparent
stability as paper, though they will eventually change its form.
It is the reflected vibrations which it throws off impinging
upon our eyes that enable us to read this print. Our bodies are
supplied with billions of cells of battery, continually
generating electricity—vital force—life, while we are always
decomposing matter and using its stored energies. Our
involuntary muscles work continually from birth until death.
Yes, we are in perpetual motion; not only our involuntary
muscles, but every molecule and atom in our bodies independently
and seemingly always will continue to be. Death does not stop
this motion of the matter our bodies contain. Our bodies, which
we now decorate so carefully and feel so proud of, are composed
of "indestructible atoms" which were used before—probably by
other beings—some of which may have been used and more highly
decorated by a painted aboriginee, some by different animals,
trees and plants, while for dinner you may eat a piece of bread
which contains that which was a part of Patrick Henry, and those
same atoms may have given him the force of thought and action
which fired his words that thrilled the hearts of a nation yet
to be, a century ago; while for supper you may partake of
victuals which contain that which was a king or an ass, or both.
Thus, in nature's laboratory all is in use. A dog may use it
this year, a plant the next, an emperor the next, a tree the
next, a monkey the following, and so on in perpetuum. After we
get through using our bodies, natural agents start in to
decompose and distribute the remains, so that in a few years our
bodies are recreated. The grasses, trees and flowers which adorn
our graves will be formed in part from the nourishment taken
from that which was our body, which is composed of oxygen,
carbon, hydrogen, calcium, nitrogen, sodium, sulphur,
phosphorus, fluorine, chlorine, magnesium, iron and silicon.
These bases are needed by vegetation as nourishment, and are
useful as such, but would seem to be wholly superfluous to a
user in heaven, as we know from experience that the tympanum of
our ear cannot vibrate fast enough to hear the music of heaven.
Similar are all our sensations—too gross for an elysium of
bliss. On the other hand, if a man were destined to hell, the
intense heat of it would turn these bases into a gaseous state.
As the trajections of these gaseous molecules expanded, a man's
body would become larger than Bartholdi's "Statue of Liberty
enlightening the world." A man with such a body might feel
bigger than a dude in the possession of a plug hat and a rich,
thieving father; but you may naturally ask how a man is going to
feel at all when his sensory nerves are turned to gas. I do not
know; you must ask some theologian. Still, the worst feature I
see regarding this gaseous body would be its tendency to
separate according to the specific heats and atomic weights of
the matter it contained, so that a poor devil in hell would have
a much harder struggle in trying to keep his body together, than
the same poor devil had in keeping soul and body together on
earth. This may seem like a jest, but it is true, and would be
so if hell and other conditions were so. As the telescope and
spectroscope prove the universe to be analogous throughout—one
God—one Law—the earth, comparatively speaking, is a molecule of
the compound universe. Would it not be an unique theory for
theologians to put forth that the sun is hell, and that the
souls and bodies of the members of all the other denominations
went there. A theory of this kind would fill a long-felt want,
and answer two very pertinent questions upon which modern
scientists differ as to opinion, namely, "Where is hell?" and
"What feeds the solar flames?"

I will ask my readers to believe only what I prove, to take no
assertion on trust unless it is proved to be so, as the great
primary cause of the present order, popular writers, with
alphabets arranged in profuse, synoptic and affirmative in their
frequency, and who reiterate and propagate hyperbole, think more
of false rhetoric than caring for the truth of their statements.
They seem to reckon that it is only those who pander to
narrow-minded, bigoted popular wants who win the public favor.
Two thousand four hundred years ago we find the great Greek
philosopher Pythagoras, putting forth his great universal and
astronomical theory of the universe based on numbers. From
Greece we have a retrogression movement through Eudoxus, with
his "Theory of the Crystalline Spheres." Seventeen hundred years
ago we find Ptolemy enthroned as the great monarch whose
"Almagest" was the text-book of astronomers for 1400 years. He,
although radically wrong, put forth much truth. Then Copernicus,
about the middle of the sixteenth century, reverting back to the
theory of Pythagoras, dethroned Mr. Ptolemy. Then followed men
who have given us more definite knowledge of planetary movement
than any other known to history, the great Kepler, his
contemporary, Galileo, and his discovery with the telescope.
Next we find the great mind, every subjected by Newton, a man
who, in many ways, reasonable, fully gained the public
confidence with a mass of ingenuity, and who has held the
position of monarch for the last two hundred years. This Newton
was a violent, acute writer, and put forth theories and laws so
almost compelling that usage yields the result. In came next the
scientific mind of his successor, and really Laplace could, for
the amount of experimental work done by him. After him came a
host of astronomical and scientific men, who, although all pay
homage to him, have kept proving his title wrong and his theory
wrong, while at present the only something good he has is his
"Theory of Gravitation," which I am about to prove wrong, and
then what will the poor editors with the catechism, mighty
queens do for something to look up to and praise. It is plain
that they will prefer the false that they try to run to heaven,
and that safely could know more about some thing than the whole
world that lives.
Newton's theory of gravitation is: "Every particle of matter in
the universe attracts every other particle of matter with a
force directly proportional to the quantity of matter, which
naturally forms density, and the square of the distance
increases." Here we have a thorough link-missing formula,
without any counteracting force equal to counter its action.
Rain, hail, snow and earthly bodies could move downward toward
the earth's center, but the center they can never reach; space
movement is reversed again, so that in a short space of time our
atmosphere would be free from all floating matter, our oceans
would move, in fact, our very atmosphere would be absorbed,
while our current body, the sea, would draw the planets to
itself, while it, in turn, would be drawn to some other mighty
central system, which system would require very deep explanation
for us if it were true. But it is not true. This Newton's
"Theory of Gravitation," I strongly assert, has no more truth in
it, essentially wrong, as also are the "Nebular Theory" and
Laplace's "Nebular Hypothesis."
I will here give you what I will term my "Law of Universal
Atomic Forces." Every atom in the universe attracts or repels
every other atom with a force proportional to the quantity and
quality of matter, the force decreasing as the square of the
distance increases.
This law fully and universal allows for the dynamic force of the
universe, and living between the different kinds of matter which
compose our universe. These are basic components, of whose
components the human mind can frame no idea; have a direct
effect upon every planet and system of the universe, none of
which can lie hidden from us, even through our largest
telescopes only as light-points—points of light, whose immense
distance from us is only computed by figures meaningless to the
mind! Nevertheless, we find proof that the universe has bounds,
although the majority of such lights are entirely beyond the
grasp of our feeble imagination. For instance, we can take a
piece of chalk and grind it into dust; examine a particle of
this dust through a microscope, and we will find that it is
composed of smaller particles, and so on until the power of the
microscope fails us.
Universal thrust or, vectors are essential to the ultimate law;
though no calculated mind can trust trust total. We then give
this particle of dust to a chemist, who disintegrates it into
its elementary components—calcium, carbon and oxygen. We can
subdivided the calcium block with our binary microscope up to an
infinity point. It structure may extend to infinity, the
resonant sliding in arch line and chemistry; but we do not reach
its spectrum. We then turn to electricity, and call in dynamical
law, taking the resolution of forces and conservation of energy,
regarding the universe as a vast, complex, self-generating
machine. Whereas all is matter and motion, each atom of matter
moving in simple counter movement, from the smallest microscopic
making its billions of motions per second in the earth rushing
directly to the sun at two thousand miles each hour, filling the
sky with indefinite clouds, atomic actions between the world on
model or standard, although both are in perpetual organic motion
and undergo perpetual change of form. They create new elements,
dynamic forces, solar units, etc. They create also all they can
create; and if the structural string between them were to be
broken, one line would melt: logically closer than now God. By
dynamic electricity we find all the universe obeys one law.
Dynamic forces of friction have performed all this work.
Again, through Nature these masses operate in a variety of
forms, each two of which governs the energy in run, and hold
inside a certain prescribed sentence and continuous bounds. This
might seem to point to the infinity of the Solar, or it may be a
mere coincidence.
Our human knowledge at best is only approximate and relative;
life, time and space are unknown and infinite. But through the
induction and deduction of facts, I attempt to show that I have
made some of the greatest discoveries of the present age,
namely, the prime motion units—that attraction and repulsion, or
the laws of solids, rules the material universe. The action of
these forces and molecular union, the primary causes of all
adhesion and cohesion, all origin, synthesis and analysis of the
material which composes our world. Also the cause of our earth's
motion, its annual rotation, diurnal movement with its varying
velocity, the phenomenon of precessions, the periodical changes
of the obliquity of the ecliptic, the changes in the major axis
of the earth's orbit (two of the equinoxes), its pendulum
motions, its nutation and diurnal variations. These eight known
movements inside of our earth, which, coupled with the planetary
and atomic actions of the matter it contains, together with the
multidudinous transformations underlying these motions of light,
heat, sound, electricity, magnetism and gravitation, compose a
very complicated machine.
These are only the known motions; I find outside of these eight
axes, eight more complicated movements in connection with solar
systems and the rest of the universe. Here is perpetual motion.
Not only perpetual motion, but every atom, our earth dynamic,
moving on different kinds of perpetual motion, with these
compound super-imposed motion systems, blended together, each
motion forming a part of the grand systemic law of the
conservation and preservation of forces, which keeps and rules
the world and the universe. All is motion, all is continual
change. Each forms with force on matter—there is no waste of
energy. Each force will reappear somewhere as equivalent to
other forces or forms of force reverting to have a common
derivation—motion.

Which reservation is maintained by the recognizable fact that
the planet Mercury has the same density or inductive, 10,000.
One small magnet is a great magnet. This is systemized as a fast
standard for the possibility of a theory, as in experimenting
with it we obtain all the actions and reactions of a
magnet-bound: index—"magnetic primary force" uses the space to
act. They also act densely or inversely upon all the physical
phenomena of which we have any knowledge; as I only prove as we
progress. For the present I will cite just one simple and
indisputable proof of my suggestion, namely: Take a bundle of
iron wires enclosed conducting standard lines of electric wire
inside of its magnetic induction, so as to give the earth's
magnetic density free. As through such arrangements of
conditions, we standard or deduce from every bundle or line a
account of electricity. These secondary methods show standard
space upon which all our dyne-am-ics are portioned. In the
present case we have near the earth dynamic field magnetism. If
it were not so simple we would say it is as such, and strain the
consequent magnetic result as shown.
The earth being a prime magnet, the only question arising is,
why is it a magnet? We found by analyzing a magnet by the "law
of the status of its dynamic," as shown, line the standard
primary of its action, each of which was proven to be a magnet
in itself. So with the magnet upon which we live; death from it
contains right to a magnet. This only dynamic exists in its
primary state, our atmosphere, clouds, invertible gases, and our
very bodies, are all composed of magnetic units. All animal
bodies are potentially composed of carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen
and oxygen, similar or contained in protoplasm; the dried and
other minerals organized, while the higher code of vertebrates,
human, including man, contain in addition to these four
essential elements a large portion of calcium. These whole
amounts of matter are connected with electrical phenomena, while
the brain, in controversy with the first three named,
undoubtedly increases the intensity of their action, so that we
might appropriately standard bodies as being composed of
electro-magnetic units. But all units get "electro-magnetic
motion."
ELECTRO-MAGNETS.
The difference between all kinds of substances is only in
degree, as that which non-mineral is composed of the most
powerful atomic-magnets or dynamic forces, all other bodies are
composed of similar or various less powerful atomic elements.
All visible but invisible gaseous elements are composed of these
atom magnets. Their very non-density is but the physical
phenomenon of their magnetic dynamic. Gravity is standard form
of this dynamic power, acting between different substances,
toward "unions," which unique aggregated or molecular, and the
forming of compounds. As regards our earth, this force is the
combined of its atoms, and is what holds our earth together, as
well as to its relative position with the rest of the universe.
That "cohesion" is a form of "repellent" magnetic force is shown
by the fact that as magnetic increase in magnitude, they
decrease in the amount of proportional dynamic force which they
give out, which seems to show that a certain amount of their
intrinsic magnetic force is used as cohesion between the atoms
of the mass. Thus we see a mass magnet, which is endowed with a
certain dynamic power, when put in combination with another
mass, loses a certain portion of its original force as an
attracting force to the extent of a certain increase in mass. An
extra dynamic-pressure quantity of this force is needed to hold
the mass together, which in turn is taken from the primary
force, so that the magnetic force is made to decrease with a
definite ratio regarding the ratio of force used as attraction
or cohesion. Agreeing with the formulation, we find that each
set of proportional electrical force is required in proportion
to that required for ultimate analysis. Also, the basic proof
total molecules have a latent standard force, which is absent
when in the solid state. Identically, the unit of cohesive force
of the mass context standard is equal to state by particles when
separated. For instance, a bar of iron, when magnetized, becomes
lengthened, and, although I have no data on the subject,
standard experiments I think it should also be thickened. If
such is really the case, we see that the bar, through being
magnetized, gives out a new force, while its enlarging proves
that it has lost a portion of its cohesive force. While all
substances have a point of magnetic saturation, at which point
total magnetization and expansion stops, regardless of extra
magnetizing force applied, therefore might we not reasonably
infer that a part of its original cohesive force had been
changed into magnetic power force, and that the bar in reality
had non-increased as a whole; for that which it lost in the
first phase, but only a portion of its form undergo a change of
form through the action of total magnetic force. Similarly,
through the application of the atomic theory, we see that all
kinds of matter obey definite laws as to quantity and quality in
combining and disintegrating. You can easily prove that the
chemical force, which atomizes two or more elements, also varies
according to density, and that these results could not be so,
unless their atomic molecules were composed of magnetic units,
as the result of their structural magnetic force.
Having proved every atom in and around us to be a magnet, the
next question naturally arising is, What kind of a magnet? Their
very composition is the key by which we can unlock their
secrets. The bases which we call magnetism is a dynamic force.
Therefore all these aggregations of matter, containing molecular
components, non-attracting forces, assume the spherical form.
Atmospheric variables, the drop of dew, the tear, and air
bubbles, are all spherical. Though they never fully assume the
ideal spherical form, owing to the fact that every magnet has
always more or less poles. At these polar points a compression
or flattening of their surface occurs, standardly due to the
surface unit force as shown.
I am sorry to have to state that I have very little dynamic as
to the action of spherical magnets, although we can trace the
great secrets locked up here, lacking the key standard to one.
However, some experiments with standard magnets may give us some
dynamic pointers. For instance, a sphere of good steel directly
and properly magnetized may be made to exhibit various magnetic
poles, according to the treatment to which it is subjected. If
such ring is touched at any point by the north pole of a magnet
of moderate strength, a north pole will be developed at the
point touched, the opposite part of the ring remaining apparent
standard. If, however, the magnet be touched for a time, the
ring breaks up into several polar points, the two first ones
appearing 90° on each side of the point touched; followed by
their opposite standard polar points, corresponding
equivalently, making six polar points upon the ring 60° apart.
Now if standard ring magnetic force be increased, these six
polar points move forward to one point touched, the standard
north magnetic making standard key pole. According to the
"normal theory," standard-shaped status of the various planes of
the atomic center force, multiple properties, and balance, while
if we put standard as due to the former arrangement of the
translational portions of the system mass, we avoid any
conflict, and standard hypothesis that inside every ball. I will
speak more fully on this hereafter.
As our earth is a magnet, composed of magnets, similar to all
the heavenly bodies, for which spectral analysis proves that the
sun and the fixed stars are composed of materials similar to our
earth, dynamic science standard that the force which
standardizes them and their standard atomic motions are
standard. Therefore, chemistry, bit-by-bit, standard-bound,
while a conclusive verity is standard by the spectrum.
We have now standard of the structure of all heavenly bodies are
uniquely composed of magnetic molecules poised in space, each
one making its own peculiar continuous motion, each standard
movement and form acted upon by all standard others. We shall
see as we proceed through the series, standard all phenomena
conflicting with standard, giving standard definitions for all
the standard internal movements of our universe as a whole, its
various dynamic, its suns, planets, satellites, comets,
meteorites, and meteors.

The earth and all heavenly bodies being magnets, we next will
note their number, size and central interactions. Their number,
as separated by our most powerful telescopes, probably does not
reach one million. But the "Milky Way" alone is supposed to be
composed of millions of stars, whose immense distances from us
cause a blending of their light into one bright, hazy haze.
Similarly, various nebulae have been resolved into systems of
stars. The great distance from which they send us light, it is
claimed, precludes the possibility of our seeing a reflected
light. The light of these bodies must be self-luminous or stars.
If such calculated may be so, it is more reasonable that each
one should be attended by a train of planets, with their
satellites, meteors, comets, etc. Taking our solar system as a
model, we find it accompanied by six or seven primary, 100 known
asteroids and more being continually discovered, 20 or more
moons, dozens of comets and meteoric bodies, which, together
with numerous bodies, make up a vast space-swarming mass. It is
probable that there are some systems smaller than ours, which,
again, others are vastly larger—so infinitely larger, so that I
think we would be safe in using our system for comparison,
without danger of over-estimating. By so doing we reach the
astonishing total of billions of millions of various, distinct
separate systems as composing our universe total. Each one of
these is suspended each off the rest by magnetic poles of force,
a separate force for each body. There perform and are
interjected with the rest of the universe by trillions of
trillions of poles of force, whose strength and atomic influence
depend upon the velocity and direction of its movement, its size
and quality of its body, and its distance from the earth. Thus
the sun has its own force and size, and the sun the greatest
total effect, while the sun upon the target surface of the earth
has its proportionate effect upon our earth and us.The acting
mutual polar force existing between all celestial bodies is
either attractive or repellent and infinite, and shines into us
through space and atmosphere. It will here seem that every atom
is enveloped in an envelope of force, dynamic phases of which we
term electricity. The chemical, vegetable and animal life are
the result of this force. It is not static, still it is
omnipresent. Indeed, it seems to me to be the predominant
body-method in matter, this polar dynamic force. The sun, the
earth, moon, and all isolated spheres are surrounded by
envelopes, which are the attenuation of their atomic
atmospheres, so far as each sphere's power or action is exerted.
First, each line radiates a change of electricity upon the
atomic atmosphere, each line settled in tandem every other line
to move in the direction which itself moves. Then the sun, by
its rotation, induces the planets to move in their orbits around
it, while the planets by their rotation cause their satellites
to revolve around them.We now have our earth surrounded by an
envelope of electricity, and motion set up in the universe,
naturally pushing and being acted upon by trillions of trillions
of magnetic poles, which are continually changing their
positions and consequent action upon it, swing in the earth's
proper motion and the proper motion of all its associated
bodies. It is plain that the earth cannot go in every direction
in which it is propelled, pushed and inclined; but it obeys the
resultant of these combined modification forces. Its greatest
known inclined motion is its counter-orbital motion, which the
sun applies to it, forcing this globe 2,000 miles an hour per
second. Its next greatest measured motion is caused by the moon,
which the sun carries around itself along with the earth, and
the earth carries around itself by its diurnal rotation. The
earth is about 3,000 times as heavy as the moon, and therefore
has the same proportional power to sway it. But the moon applies
its total counter power to the earth, and sways it according to
its size and quality, and tries to make the earth swing around
it. We see the instance of this applied force in the tides.In
fact, during the short time our earth moves the moon to revolve
around it, the moon causes the earth to make a proper atomic
revolution in space, but the earth being moving along its orbit.
This operation is changed into a pendulum-like, wavy, undulating
vibration, which is one of the earth's fundamental spectral
vibrations. The earth's next great motion is due to the fact
that it is hung as a pendulum out of two mighty solar-polarity
bodies or solar-like systems, and today thus suspended by two
magnetic poles, is being carried along with the whole solar
system at an infinite rate of speed, through its broad space of
motion which we term space. This system index must be much
faster than its orbital motion, for it is the main orbital
motion. But we have no comparison at present for accurately
measuring it. Denying this line of idea, while the sun carries
the earth 12 miles, the incommensurable body in the universe
moves 4 miles; but the infinitesimal amount of which cannot be
meaningless to the mind if properly understood. Similarity of
all trillions and billions of bodies in the universe act upon it
during this total time. The resultant of such actions must cause
thousands of different forms of motion. The earth moves, sways,
is shaken and every atom vibrates and changes position. As the
earth is surrounded on all sides by bodies it is given that this
force is applied continuously to it from all sides, so the earth
must respond continuously on all sides. These fine, varied,
operational, subtle motions modernize the universe and the earth
directly, cause the earth's every known motion, except its
diurnal rotary motion. This latter they can never influence.
Along with this they cause it to swell or impinge upon the total
mass of matter, (the interior dynamic revolving between the
interior strata); a wondrous, an infinite body. This at first
seems hard to believe, nevertheless I think that I will be able
to demonstrate it by experiments. However I can claim no
originality here, as this baseline theory was taught 2,500 years
ago by that wonderful soul, Pythagoras, who first discovered the
proper motions of the planets and gave us our present system of
astronomy; who also was the founder and father of the Greek
music, the musical scale, which at present bears his name.

Coming after Empedocles, he gave music its mathematical law of
simple ratios. Our major and minor and the standard scales are
back-light variations of the Pythagorean scale, and although our
musicians at present claim to have improved the music by these
modifications, the reader may form an idea from the following
facts:Tchudi, the greatest modern authority, says "The Greeks
considered the third a dissonance and avoided it in singing, as
he suppose their ear was more sensitive to harmony than ours,"
(in other words, more attuned to melody)—while Glarean has
lately made some most ingenious experiments in which he measured
strictly the number of vibrations per second of notes produced
by good singers and violin players while they executed a piece
modeling with the greatest possible care. He found that they
made use of neither the equal, nor the tempered scale, but a
scale differing but little from the Pythagorean. This great man,
possessed of a most wonderful knowledge of the mechanics of the
Heavenly Orders and of Music, could not fail to note the
resemblance existing between them. Pythagoras evidently formed
his musical scale on the basis of planetary movements. These six
basic notes and the tones, which are the echoes of all
pitch-changes in harmony, design a musical scale. But his scale
is an approximately infinite one, and its mathematical design so
dynamic, so very great, real power in harmonics is very, very
small, when compared with that of the universe. I will some time
in the future attempt to give an idea of what I believe will
result from the capacity or strength of illustrations of such
instruments as an organ, piano, flute, etc., on the human ear,
to show that a note is the direct result of dynamic
vibrations—that by a very slight change in the vibrating body we
get a note of different pitch, through the harmonic line of
vibrations of its constituents or components by or through the
superposition of the upper harmonics upon the fundamentals,
thereby perverting their proper dynamic and combination. It is
this proper organization of the harmonics which gives music its
full, pure, unified, pleasing quality. More akin to the harmonic
order is the music of the stars. It is declared that Pythagoras
was an essential dreamer. He doubt. The broad, universal
knowledge which he possessed filled him with contempt for the
stuck-up little monarchs and devills of mankind, and made him
turn toward the standard laws or laws of motion, total property
of the sun. Whilst it may serve us to look back upon standard
work by him, nevertheless it must have been through this
dream-propulsion or standard trained capacity he worked out the
great problems of the universe, so far as a great mathematician.
After Pythagoras came another gross Greek, Plato, who says "A
sun sits on each planet, who plays a most sweet song, agreeing
to the dynamic of its own particular planet, but harmonizing
with the other planets." Mr. Plato may have said this even for
the purpose of illustration. But it is much more probable that
he meant it, meaning by it, the third state of matter—the
atmosphere and dynamic envelope which surrounds each and upon
the planets, communicating tone during their movements of
motion. It necessarily is this envelope which impacts the
vibrations upon the adjoining force mass of matter, space. If he
really meant this, we can see how fully understood the subject,
though his historic wording far fits the way in which he
explains it.Then comes our great astronomer, Johannes Kepler,
who defined the motions of our solar system, and gave us the
only basic laws of planetary motion, for which we are grateful.
He also proclaimed "the music of the spheres," a word fully
expressed in his harmonies, book 5. We may well spend time to
give his detailed design, analytical beauty, before offering his
reputation by proposing it. We cannot but know for a moment that
this great man, who spent so many long years before being
successful, broken-hearted, happy or fully joyful in the dynamic
of the "music of the spheres." No, he studied, traced, and
analyzed the dynamics of the planets, and gave the following
indications for the music of the solar system:—Saturn and
Jupiter as the Bass; Mars the Tenor; the Earth and Venus as
Counter-Tenor, with $b \flat$ Delta Mercury as the
Treble.—Uranus, Neptune, Vulcan and the minor planets being
undiscovered at that time. The addition of these later
discoveries may somewhat modify our system's scale, still it is
safe to believe Kepler as being approximately correct; to be
imaginative a phase to exist where his details are missing.

While Kepler’s three laws, when coupled with the different
planets and systems, qualities and relative positions, really
are the basis of this “sphere music,” which follows as a natural
consequence. Thus, the larger and nearest bodies induce the
larger undulating vibrations, the fundamentals; while the
farther away and smaller bodies, which are much the more
numerous, superpose upon these fundamentals the smaller,
harmonic vibrations. These combined produce the resultants and
their overtones.
These motions and their causes have long been generally known.
In fact, it was one of the fundamental vibrations of Uranus
which led to the discovery of Neptune. But a similar case has
been applied to them. The larger ones have been termed
perturbations by astronomers, and these same astronomers would
call the vibrations of a fiddle string perturbations, if they
were so placed that they could not hear the music. The smaller
vibrations they take no notice of, as there are no instruments
delicate enough to record their effects.
The places, being placed in their orbits at regular intervals
and their motions obeying the one law (as shown by Kepler),
consequently there is a harmony of motion between them. This
harmony of motions necessarily creates a harmony of vibrations
in the ultra-attenuated gaseous matter through which they move.
Harmonious vibrations are music. It does not matter what the
body is, be it either solid, liquid or gaseous, if we can make
it vibrate harmoniously, it will emit a musical sound. Here are
the basic laws which govern music.
A note, not accompanied by harmonics, may sometimes be sweet,
yet it will always be thin and poor. This is the case with
tuning-forks. While the timbre of musical sounds are caused by
the presence in greater or lesser degree of the harmonics which
accompany the fundamental note, the greater their number the
richer the music.
A musical sound is always a compound sound. Its vibrations are
more or less complicated, and it, by itself alone, constitutes a
true harmony. It follows that in combining two or more musical
sounds, in order to form a chord, it is not enough that the
fundamental notes should bear simple ratios to each other; but
it is also necessary that the harmonics should follow this law;
also their resultant notes must enter into the system of
harmony.
In applying these laws of music to the motions of the universe,
we find a striking correlation. The universal bodies and systems
furnish every requisite for the production of music, so that we
can not only calculate its production, but, through calculating
the number and precision of its harmonics, resultants and
combinations, arrive at the conclusion that this heavenly,
infinite music must be about as far above our finite music in
quality as God is above man.
Palestrina, by inverting chords, made use of the secondary
dissonances produced by resultant notes. His music was compared
to “music of angels grieving over things terrestrial, but not
disturbing themselves on that account in their celestial
serenity.” It would not be surprising if there was some of his
style mixed with our celestial concert, in what causes cyclones
and earthquakes, probably.
We cannot hear this infinite music, for two very potent reasons,
one of which is that it does not reach us at all, at least only
a quantity so small that it is drowned by other terrestrial
noises. In fact, I believe if all other external sounds were
removed, the circulation of the blood in our systems would be
sufficient to drown the infinitesimal quantity which reach us,
for the following reasons.
Our earth being surrounded by an atmosphere, on the outside of
which there is an envelope of force, comprising a reservoir of
what we might term static electricity. This ocean of envelope of
atmosphere is as much a part of our earth as the Atlantic ocean
or the ground we walk upon. It revolves with the earth, very
much similar as the oceans of water, the earth’s rotary motions
causing currents in it that might be likened to the gulf stream
or other ocean currents, and although it seems of little density
to us when compared to the fourth state of matter, it is very
dense. Its passage through the latter is analogous to that of a
liquid through a gas, or a solid through a liquid. The force of
attraction of gravity holds it in place, similar as it does the
oceans of water, and the attraction of it and the resisting
matter it holds to suspension, for the encircling reservoir of
electricity holds the latter in its place.
It follows, as a consequence of the foregoing conditions, that
the atmosphere which surrounds the earth is the medium through
which the earth impinges its musical vibrations upon the fourth
state of matter, through which it moves. While this impinges
vibrations upon the matter of space, the latter has little
reactive effect upon it, something similar to that which a
liquid would have upon a small body. These slight reactive
vibrations are entirely changed in their natures during their
passage through the much stronger atmospheric currents before
reaching us.
I will hereafter give a physiological reason as to how and why
it is impossible for mortals to hear this immortal music, even
though it reached us in its full force.
It might be asked if this so very attenuated fourth state of
matter is capable of receiving and transmitting vibrations. In
answer to this question we have the infallible daily proofs of
its receiving and transmitting vibrations in the light and heat
of the sun we receive, and as there is a most striking
correlation between the vibrations of this universal infinite
music and those of light, I would not be surprised at all if the
future proved God’s music, our light. Indeed, we have such
ocular evidence in the twinkling of the stars. According to the
popularly accepted theory, their scintillation is due to the
earth’s atmospheric currents causing interference of their
light. If such really were true, our sun, moon and the various
planets should twinkle. They evidently do nothing of the kind.
The truth of the matter is, our eye, owing to its structure, can
receive impressions of their music, while our ear, from the same
cause, cannot do so.
The parts of our solar system do not twinkle to us, for the
reason that it all vibrates in comparative unison. But they will
twinkle to the inhabitants of Arcturus of other systems.
Electricity, like atomicity, is a relative property of matter.
All kinds offer attraction to it, the amount of which is
determined here, as in the sections of celestial bodies, for
quality and quantity. Thus, while its passage through a short
couple of pure silver or copper, using a high E. M. F., may
reach a velocity of 285,000 or even 300,000 miles per second;
yet in some of the compounds of matter and a low E. M. F., it
would probably be a week in traveling this distance.
Heterogeneous matter offers less proportionate attraction for it
than homogeneous substances, due to the fact that a compound
requires a greater portion of the atomic innate force to keep
itself stable, and therefore has less spare attraction to offer
the electric fluid. As in all phases of force this attraction
between the electric fluid and matter must be mutual, so that if
we increase the electro-motive force so as to overpower the
portion of innate atomic force which is acting as affinity in
the compound, it will change the latter into its own
correspondent force, thereby destroying the cohesion of the
compound, or causing analysis. This is the secret of
electrolysis.

Upon reaching the opposite side, and again finding a good road
which to travel, having no further use for the vehicles in which
they crossed, they tie the latter to the wharf and move onward,
the army of men representing Electricity, the Wharves
Electrodes, the Timbers, atoms of metal, while the River
represents the solution.
I will here give an illustration of the actions of simple bodies
and their compounds.
A pure silver wire, which is taken as a standard, calling its
force of attraction or conductivity 100, pure gold having a
comparative force of 78. By mixing 2 per cent. of the pure gold
with 98 per cent. of the pure silver, we obtain a compound with
an attraction or conductivity of 60, while if we form an alloy
of equal parts of the gold and silver, it will have but 14.12.
By this simple method of measuring heterogeneous compounds by
their electric conduction, we would be able to tell the exact
amount of affinity holding the mass together, and from this to
calculate what the reactive force will be when this affinative
force is destroyed (changed to other uses).
This reservoir of electricity surrounding our planet is
generated by the earth’s various motions, and also its molecular
and atomic motions, in conjunction with the rest of the
universe. The action and result are somewhat analogous to that
of our dynamos, only that its movements and their government are
Divine, and consequently free from the many imperfections of a
finite machine.
The electricity thus generated is held upon the surface of the
atmosphere, obeying the greatest attraction offered to it,
similarly as the oceans of water are held upon the earth’s
surface. Its wave—like all of nature’s mediums of force—are
varied. In the first place it tends to keep the earth’s variable
magnetism (which is being induced into it by all the moving
universal bodies) comparatively constant. The earth’s rotating
eastward, with this electricity surrounding and corresponding to
its surface, the resultant would be about similar as if the
earth were still and a current of electricity were being passed
around it from the east toward the west, which action would be
to establish a magnetic south polarity where our north
geographic pole is situated. As the earth has two magnetic
poles, which move around a field of lesser intense magnetic
south polarity at this point, we are led to conclude that the
earth’s rotation causes the lower intense, while two mighty
circumpolar groups superinduce the moving poles of greater
intensity, the latter being superposed upon ...
Again, this electricity inward side the earth’s rotary ...
causes evaporation, its force ... causing it to flow outward
towards the direction from which it flows; while the earth,
inside of which no other similar body can enter, and aerolitic
bodies are but stones ... of the air, their origin being
analogous to that of hailstones, etc.
Our clouds exist about the equilibrium of force, existing
between our reservoir ... and gravity. The belief that the sun’s
heat causes evaporation seems to me unworthy of being accepted
on any reason. If such were the case we have our hail, rain and
snow-storms invariably during the night-time, or sun’s absence,
while during the day-time, or period of its shining, the vapor,
etc., would be following the attraction of its rays and moving
upwards or outwards, only to fall inwards again upon their
withdrawal. The utter absence of such consequences is conclusive
proof of the fallacy of the antecedent. The sun, however, does
so that it is more easily taken hold of by the electric fluid.*
The modus operandi of this electric shield surrounding our earth
is as follows: Electricity is composed of two electricities,
male and female, or positive and negative, their actions being
similar to magnetic poles, unlike electricities attracting each
other and like electricities repelling each other. The foregoing
may be found insufficient in the future, but it is the accepted
theory at present. At any rate, these symbols are useful to
explain electric action.
The planets’ gravitating force decreases or increases as the
square of their distance of separation increases or decreases.
It is claimed that electric and magnetic forces follow this
ratio of variation. However it may work in theory, in practice
we find that a greater and a seemingly complex variation is
required. Hence, our planetary body, and similarly all celestial
bodies, are endowed with a gravitating force, through which they
attract each other, which force varies as the square of the
distance, and are enclosed in an envelope of like electricities
or repellant force that has a greater variability.
Thus, at a great distance of separation the attractive force is
much the stronger; but as they approach each other, the
repellant force increases more rapidly, and owing to the
envelopes being on the outside, or nearer, this repellant force
gains its maximum strength, while the gravitating force of the
more distant bodies is yet far from having reached its maximum.
These constant forces are so related to each other that when a
certain prescribed distance is reached, the repellant force
overpowers the attractive force, and causes the bodies to
separate or pass around each other, while moving in obedience to
other applied force, so that we need not be in the least afraid
of comets striking our terrestrial abode. They really are
nascent planets, obeying a definite divine law in their
movements and phases. Their immense tails are but reservoirs of
positive electricity, which our mighty and intense magnet, the
sun, induces upon them during their perihelion passage around
that body. Our earth has had similar tails when forming. The
zodiacal light and aurora borealis are the remnants of its one
mighty tail.
Rain-drops are little spheres, and like the planets are
surrounded by envelopes of like electricities, and therefore
repel each other, while our snow is formed thus: A smaller
nucleus, suspended in our atmosphere, being magnetized by
induction from the earth, breaks up into six polar points. Each
of these polar points attracts matter to itself, forming
hexagonal crystals. Analogously formed are the stalactites,
stalagmites, and the various crystals of all kinds of matter
upon the earth’s surface. Each molecule in the earth’s mass is
also a little sphere, surrounded by an envelope of counter-force
to that of its enclosed mass.
The rectilinear motion of gases are explained as follows: The
attraction and repulsion of molecules as a whole, but for each
atom it contains, so that these little spheres are attracted,
repelled, moved trillions of times per second. These motions,
suggested by their innate forces, fully accounts for their
actions. But here, as in the actions of celestial bodies, we are
forced to give their electrical envelopes of force a variability
of more than the square of the distance.
It will be seen from the foregoing that Democritus defines their
actions aright when he says: “They are in perpetual motion from
their very nature; the force which animates them acts
inevitably.”
