When Frenchy Left The Hotel.....An Overlooked Detail At The
Inquest

Eddie Fitzgerald at the Coroner's Inquest May 13, 1891

Q What time did you go to bed that night? A. I didn't go to bed
at all.
Q About five o'clock in the morning, what were you doing?
A. At five o'clock, between five and half past five, I was
cleaning up.
Q Where were you sweeping? A. About the middle of the floor,
near the end of the bar.
Q Did you see this man, the prisoner, come out?
A. Yes, sir.
Q. Describe to the Jury the way he came out - how did he come
out? A. He came out of the hall, and he
kept in near the partition like that, until he got to the door
and he went out the side door as if he sneaked out.
Objected to. -
Q How did he turn his head at the time?
Mr. House: He must put nothing but proper questions; the counsel
now puts a question which suggests an answer.
Objection overruled; exception.
Q (Repeated) A. All sideways.
Q Towards the partition? A. Towards the partition.
Q Could you see his face? A. His sneaking out drew my attention
to it, he kept out close to the partition.
Q Is that to the box? A. Yes, sir.
Q Do men ordinarily go out that way in the morning?
A. Most men, they go right through the store, through the bar.
Q. They didn't ordinarily go through this box when they go out
in the morning? A. No, sir.
Q: I show you the stairs, and here is the door where you go into
the hallway; there is the ice box, and here is the door out
here; now, where were you standing when he came through here -
here is the bar, and there is the doorway, and here is the
entryway? A. There is a curtain here.
Q: Where were you? A. I was just about this side - the curtain
was not up.
Q: You were on the side where the thing is marked O; where did
you see him come out of? A. That door. (Indicating to diagram.)
Q: How did he go along? Take your pencil and mark it.
A. He came out this way through the hall and kept sneaking right
around this way.
Q Here is the door? A. Yes, sir.
Q He went right through that way? A. Yes, sir.
The diagram is now shown to the Jury.
Mr. Wellman: He saw this man come around tore and saw
this man go around this partition here, and go
right through here instead of going through the bar.
Q: The door at the feet of the stairs, do you keep that
locked? A. That is locked; the foot of the stairs is
always locked.
By a Juror:-
. Q Was there any key in the inside of the door? A. There
is a key, but it is not in the inside of the door
From this we learn Ali attempted to sneak out of the Hotel.
Fast forward to June 30th at the Trial.

A. Well I could see from his face —— the way he went in the box
—— who he was.
Q. Well what was your impression of a man going out in that way
—— whether it was a thief, or
something of the kind? “Why didn’t you look after him?”
A. Because I didn’t think there was anything up. I didn’t think
there was anything the matter.
By Mr. Wellman:
Q. Is there anything to steal upstairs?
A. No, sir.
By Mr. House:
Q. Now, Mr. Fitzgerald, will you please describe the clothing
that this defendant had on, on the
morning that he went out?
A. Yes sir.
Q. Please describe it?
A. He had a derby hat.
Q. Yes?
A. He had a long overcoat.
Q. Yes?
A. He didn’t have his arms in the sleeves of the overcoat?
By Mr. Wellman:
Q. He didn’t have his arms in the sleeves of the overcoat?
A. No, sir.

Eddie didn't mention that Ali put his overcoat on without
putting his arms in the sleeves at the Coroner's Inquest.
The visual I get from envisioning Ali hugging the wall with his
face turned, his arms not in the overcoat's sleeves, and the
overcoat draped over
his shoulders, is that he didn't want Fitzgerald to see his
hands.
Any thoughts?
