       Can you tell me of five or six important criminal trials, in
       this country or elsewhere, where the evidence was purely
       circumstantial?
       NUISANCE.
       In two recent trials in this city, for murder, the prisoners
       were convicted on circumstantial evidence—the trial of "Frenchy"
       for murdering "Shakespeare," and the trial of Carlyle Harris.
       The claimant in the famous Tichborne trial carried on his case
       very largely by circumstantial evidence; and the Montgomery
       murder trial in Ireland was put through on that evidence.
       The jury disagreed twice; a third jury convicted Montgomery,
       whereupon he confessed, and was executed Aug. 26, 1873.
       Prof. Webster, in 1850, was convicted on circumstantial
       evidence of having murdered Dr. Parkman. The circumstantial
       evidence indicated the guilt of Mrs. Cunningham, accused of the
       murder of Dr. Burdell in 1857, but she was acquitted;
       so also did it in the case of Richard Robinson, who killed
       Helen Jewett, but was acquitted in 1836.
