NO MONEY TO PAY EXPERT WITNESSES.
The contingent fund of the District Attorney's office has been
exhausted, and Mr. Nicoll has tried in vain to get an additional
appropriation from the Board of Estimate and Apportionment.
There was a deficiency of $6,000 at the beginning of the year,
owing to the heavy expenses in the trial of Ameer Ben Ali or
"Frenchy, No. 1." The Board appropriated $15,000, so only $9,000
was left. The testimony of the experts in the trials of Carlyle
W. Harris and E. M. Field was exceedingly expensive, and the
investigation of the charge against Dr. R. W. Buchanan, who is
accused of poisoning his wife, will entail a big outlay. Dr.
Allen McLane Hamilton, for his services in the Harris case,
received $1,500. Dr. G. De F. Smith, of No. 20 East Twenty-ninth
Street., has filed a claim for $500 for testifying in the same
trial. There is no money to pay him, so he has filed papers
preparatory to suing the county. Professor Rudolph A. Witthaus's
bill for $5,000 also remains unpaid.
