       Drop the Museum Idea.
It is to be feared that Chicago, in its thirst for rain and its
love for something pertaining to the sensational or criminal,
may seriously cripple the best interests of the big fair in
which every section of the country should be equally interested.
The Columbian exposition was designed to be an exhibition of the
resources and manufactures, and the arts of the
different states and foreign countries, rather than a display of
       dime museum attractions.
Enterprising fakirs are scouring the country in search of
something criminally unique for exhibition at the fair.
Recently, the old home of the James boys was secured, and this
may soon be at Chicago in '93.
The room where “Frenchy No. 1” committed the most brutal murder
of the year in New York may be shown—and so on down a long
       list.**
The average visitor who will attend the fair will care nothing
for these things. It will be no special credit to Missouri
to have the former room of the James boys exhibited to the
world. Nine-tenths of the visitors will not have heard
of them, and the other tenth will care nothing about it. What
foreigners expect to see when they come to the fair
is a representative display of those things which most
fittingly show the advancement and resources of America
instead of a collection of poor attractions for a first-class
       museum.
       **It wasn't.
