This Tribune scribe found no fault in the proceedings or
       second-degree verdict....
Whitelaw Reid was the editor of the paper.,,I can't determine
       who actually wrote the article.
       New York Tribune
       July 11 1891

The convicted murderer commonly known as "Frenchy" received
yesterday the sentence to life imprisonment
which was inevitable under the finding of the jury. Some fault
has been found with the jury for the verdict which
they rendered, and the prisoner's counsel affirmed yesterday
that it should have been murder in the first
degree or nothing. Recorder Smyth, however, expressed decided
dissent from this opinion, and declared that
the jury had reached as correct a conclusion on the evidence as
could have been arrived at. We see no reason
to complain of the result of this remarkable trial. In any case
of purely circumstantial evidence there is room
for doubt, and the jury gave the prisoner, rightly, we think,
the benefit of this doubt. The case was well managed
both by the police detectives and the District-Attorney, and
the outcome is all that could reasonably have been expected.
