Photograph of Dr. Henry E. Allison ( seated, far left) at The
Willard Asylum, in the 1880s, before he became the
Superintendent of Matteawan Asylum.
Allison served as an assistant physician at the Willard
facility. Key details include:
He received his M.D. in June 1878 and shortly afterward became
an assistant physician at Willard Asylum in Ovid, N.Y.
He is documented in historical medical directories and asylum
staff lists from the late 19th century (e.g., as Assistant
Physician at Willard Asylum for the Chronic Insane).
He later advanced in his career, including roles at other New
York institutions like Matteawan State Hospital for the
Criminally Insane (where he became superintendent).
Willard Asylum opened in 1869, so his tenure in the late
1870s–1880s fits squarely in the 19th century. The first medical
superintendent was Dr. John B. Chapin, with various assistant
physicians and staff supporting operations as the patient
population grew rapidly.
