       A RIDICULOUS VERDICT.
       Remarkable Unanimity of Sentiment About "Frenchy's" Conviction.
       Tribune: The presumption that the Algerian was guilty of a
       deliberate and most atrocious murder was strong indeed, but in
       the absence of clear and positive proof connecting him with the
       crime, the jury are not to be blamed for rendering a milder
       verdict than would seem to have been called for.
       Herald: Either Ben Ali is guilty of murder in the first degree
       or he is innocent. The butchery of old Carrie Brown is
       paralleled only by the Whitechapel horrors in London. It was the
       work of a human fiend. To find that Ben Ali was the monster and
       then hold him guilty only of murder in the second degree is more
       than absurd. It is asinine. The inhuman butcher in the East
       River Hotel found guilty of murder in the second degree shakes
       confidence in our jury system.
       Advertiser: Convicted to make a record for Inspector Byrnes.
       That is the verdict in the Ameer Ben Ali case.
       Commercial Advertiser: Never has New York been the scene of so
       disgraceful a trial as that which ended yesterday. Never has the
       fact been so plainly demonstrated that New Yorkers, every man,
       woman and child of us, are living under an autocracy as bad as
       the one which the country shook off 115 years ago today. Our
       courts, our police, our jury system, our District Attorney's
       office—all alike are disgraced by the trial and conviction of
       Ben Ali. And New Yorkers, on this anniversary of the day of
       freedom, are made aware that they are individually at the mercy
       of our police, and that our courts will not protect them from
       its outrages if they be poor or friendless, or if their lives be
       needed to maintain an officer's selfish vanity.
