detailing the sordid history of one of the true eyesores of the
Lower East Side during the mid to latter part of the 19th
Century.
Nothing gilded about this Gilded Age den of iniquity.

Two men, Alexander Irvine, an Irish-born missionary in the Lower
East Side, and Charles Gardner, a hired detective working for
Rev. Samuel Parkhurst, a minister who was hell bent on wiping
out what he termed immorality in the city and who would be
instrumental in the 1895 Lexow Committee hearings, both paid a
visit to the East River Hotel
I've included East River Echo Numbers 109 and 130 which touch on
their visits to the Hotel.

This condemned building would be right between the East River
hotel at 14 Catherine Slip and this infamous bar at 18. I'm
guessing condemned one maybe right on the corner.
P.S. The Bar was also a Sailor's Home run by the Bowe brothers
in the early and mid 1800s.

The NYPL collection lists this photo as '20 Catherine Slip'....
Number 18 would be under the arrow....Number 20 was the building
to its left.

16 Catherine Slip then would be next to the one with the arrow
to the left. That would be the condemned building from post #2.

The Hotel had a multiple numbered address....14-16
Catherine....as shown.
Red arrow in sketch indicates number 16.

Do you think the East River Hotel was perhaps sold and divided
and under a new name or perhaps number 16 back under the old
name of Ward Four Hotel by 1907?
There was I believe another establishment that was named the
East River Hotel that was almost destroyed in a fire in 1897. I
think it was in a different neighbourhood based in the other
burned buildings.

That’s why I was thinking the Hotel might have been razed prior
to 1897. Now I see it was still around in 1907
in structure if not in name. If so, this information might help
in the search for a possible picture or other information about
the building’s history.
