       English Translation October 21st, 1897
       My dear Mr. Robillard,
I am infinitely sorry that your postcard reached me so late:
nevertheless, I hasten to send you enclosed the lists I
currently have in hand comprising about 300 signatures. It is
also to be regretted that you did not wait until the
end of the month to present your petition, because during this
election time, it would have been easy for me to
collect not just five hundred, but several thousand signatures.
I found among the citizens of my district not only
eagerness but enthusiasm to demand the release of our
       unfortunate Algerian.
May you achieve full success in the charitable mission you have
undertaken; we will see afterward about
chipping in to put your protégé in a safe place.
       Yours very devotedly,
       F. F. Omer Roy
