       Monsieur le Gouverneur,
       Me Ovide Robillard, avocat à New-York, me prie d'appuyer auprès
       de Votre Excellence une requête qu'il vous a récemment présentée
       à l'effet d'obtenir la grâce du sieur Amer-Ben-Ali, sujet
       français, condamné en 1891, à la détention à perpétuité pour un
       crime dont il a toujours affirmé n'être pas coupable. Il semble
       résulter de la pétition qui vous a été adressée à ce sujet et
       qui porte nombre de signatures les plus honorables, que la
       culpabilité de cet individu était au moins douteuse. Je prends
       en conséquence la liberté de recommander son dossier à votre
       bienveillant examen.
       Veuillez agréer, Monsieur le Gouverneur, les assurances de ma
       haute considération.

       Mr. Frank S. Black,
       Governor of the State of New York,
       in Albany, N. Y.
       Mr. Governor,
       Mr. Ovide Robillard, an attorney in New York, requests that I
       support before Your Excellency a petition that he recently
       presented to you for the purpose of obtaining a pardon for Mr.
       Amer-Ben-Ali, a French subject, convicted in 1891, to life
       imprisonment for a crime of which he has always claimed not to
       be guilty. It appears from the petition addressed to you on this
       matter—which bears many of the most honorable signatures—that
       the guilt of this individual was at the very least doubtful. I
       therefore take the liberty of recommending his file to your
       benevolent consideration.
       Please accept, Mr. Governor, the assurances of my highest
       consideration.

       Jules Patenôtre des Noyers (often signing simply as Jules
       Patenôtre) was the French Ambassador to the United States in
       1897.
       He served as the diplomat heading the French mission in
       Washington from 1891 until late 1897, when he was succeeded by
       Jules Cambon.
