Photo of Jean-Baptiste Martin, from his obituary in New York
Hotel Review, June 22, 1918.

Note that the obituary states he arrived in the US in 1885 (in
the A-Z you wrote 1880)

Pete:
We were both wrong about when Martin came to the U.S.
It wasn't 1880, as I thought, or 1885, as you wrote in your last
post.....it was 1883.
I double checked what the two of us had claimed because I came
across a photo of the Cafe Martin,
which I posted on the Happy New Year 2026! thread. I learned
from reading a little more about the
Martin Brothers that J.B not only owned the Hotel Martin, but
was co-owner of the Cafe Martin with
Louis.
By the way.....architect Stanford White and Evelyn Nesbit dined
at the Cafe Martin, just before they went to
Madison Square Garden...the night Harry Thaw shot White in 1906.

The Stanford White, Evelyn Nesbit, and Cafe Martin connection
centers on the scandalous affair and murder trial: Evelyn
Nesbit, a famous model/actress, had a notorious affair with
renowned architect Stanford White, leading her jealous husband,
Harry Thaw, to murder White at Madison Square Garden in 1906;
testimony from the famous "Trial of the Century" revealed Nesbit
and White met at the Cafe Martin, a New York restaurant, before
the fatal shooting, with Nesbit testifying about seeing White
there and describing their complex relationship, which involved
White's controlling interest in her career and life.
Link to The Bowery Boys website....photos and a podcast. There's
two short films...one of which features Nesbit singing.
